very weird only has been happening in the past 2 months on my w116 300sd om617 everything is new in the car the battery, glowplugs, oil, all filters, recent valve adjustment etc.

The car starts up right away but i have to hold the gas pedal down for a couple seconds before the engine fully turns over and runs perfectly.

If i dont hold the pedal down it runs for a second or two then stalls and shuts off. Do i need to adjust my idle higher or something? or is this normal for a older diesel in this cold weather.

How much of the pedal are you pressing down?

Usually when you have a start and stop, it means you have an air leak somewhere.

No primer pump leaks. Everything in engine in pretty much brand new.

I have to depress pedal for about 10 seconds or less then it runs perfect as usual.

I use delvac 15-40 non syntetic. Since its been real cold this winter in the northeast can this be a problem. I was thinking of changing to mobil 1 5-40 turbo diesel formula today since im due for a oil change.

The cars a 1980 with close to 200k. Can this be normal with a high mileage engine?

My car does the same thing when it's cold but I think my primer has a small leak allowing air into the system.

My car does the same thing but only after a long drive (hour or more). If I go to restart quickly after shutting off I have to floor it for the first seconds to keep it running or it will sputter and die. If I open the gas cap there is a huge whoosh of air (vacuum). After this it will start normally until the next long drive.

I assume its my tank vent clogged up somewhere. Just haven't really dug into it much yet to verify.

The vent/valve is a bell looking thing. Could be clogged it is under the car.

I did look at that and take a coat hanger to it. Didn't seem to be stuck and no debris came out. Thats all I've done though.

on my w123 there are 3 lines coming out of the fuel tank. All were rusted and leaking.
1 supply
1 return
1 for that vent
the valve opens both directions under minimal pressures.

the valve was like under the rear seat floor pan.
