Cracked case?!
Cracked case?!
On my way to work this morning I noticed a little smoke on the freeway and when got to my shop I saw a small trail into my parking spot. When I looked under my car I had a stream coming out of the corner of the pan. I thought the gasket came apart and was leaking. I dropped the pan and found this. WTF am I supposed to do? I have a spare trans but I think I'm going to clean out the crack and stuff some jb in it to get it back home.
Anyone seen this before?
Havent seen that before. I would agree with JB to get you home though. Sucks man.
Methinks you turned the screw out a weee bit too far, and the trans was NOT HAPPY, and made it's case known.
Sucks though, but now you have motivation to throw a 6-speed in there!
It's staying autotragic.
I put a coat of jb on it loosened the tail shaft housing and the crack closed and I then retorqued the bolt that hold the tail housing on. By torque I mean as tight as I can get them comfortably then some. I hope that will hold the fluid in enough for my 30mi drive home.
Well I got the trans out and went to put my spare in but low and behold I found chunks of alumn and small needle bearing pieces in the pan of the spare. Crap.
I tore the spare down and haven't found the source yet as I need to make a socket for the tail shaft assy to get it apart. I found nothing wrong with all the parts in the front half.
Anyone happen to have a breakdown of a r115 trans? I'll get more numbers off it tomorrow but those are the ones that stuck in my head. It's a 80' 300sd om617 turbo.
I don't know why it happened just now I've put ~2000 mi on this setup including a trip tithe drags with 6-7 passes etc... I have the pressure turned up about 2 full turns on the modulator and it's left with no vacuum source.
I was having alittle fun on the on ramp this morning wide open manual 2nd sideways around 5100rpm then I shifted into 3rd and thats when I noticed the smoke from the oil leaking and blowing back onto the exhaust.
Im thinking that 3rd gear activates that last servo on the main case and there was so much pressure that it forced the case apart and right where the crack is it's the thinnest point for the shifting rod to pass through. I'll take some pics tomorrow.
with this and all the other great destruction pics you have on the fail thread, I think you need to write a letter to Ford and MB and state your case for being hired as a field tester of products!
I wish.
