CNG isn't any more difficult to tune than a gas engine. It makes sense MB would aim for a cheap "record" after faltering with Chrysler, again.

Uhmmm... Ya might want to read the article again. Speedriven is not affiliated with Mercedes at all, in fact they are an aftermarket company. Looks like they are quite innovative to me.

Whats innovative about converting a car to CNG? Its done pretty frequently in Europe which means the parts and knowledge to convert it are probably readily available. Not a very difficult task considering the previous record was held by a 4-banger powered luxury sedan, an 800hp twin-turbo V12 should be able to do that without breaking a sweat given CNG's 130-octane rating!
The stock top speed is 185 with "only" 410hp, I'd be surprised if it couldn't beat 225mph with double the stock power! An SL65 with 604hp tops out at 210mph.

I'm thinking about converting my 1956 Mercedes 190 gas 4 cylinder in to a cng/carb set up like a fork lift in case gas prices go back up!

It surely couldn't hurt. I can't remember the buisness name, but on www.pirate4x4.com there is a good vendor for propane & he can help you size it right.
