I haven't got it apart yet but I'm guessing the crankshaft and pulley are f'd up. For those who have this engine or similar engines check to make sure this bolt is tight!
1981 300SD...Too much propane = bent rods. Junked
1980 240D...Body fell off. Saved drivetrain and junked
1985 300D...No.2 and N2O = 16.35@85mph. Sold
1999 E300TD...3" exhaust with banks muffler, Hx-35, 215hp tune, IP resistor box, bad crankshaft snout
2005 E320 CDI...AMG injectors, EGR removed, mapping

02-28-2011, 02:41 PM #1Well I was driving home from school today and I thought the alternator failed...come to find out the harmonic balancer bolt loosened up and none of my accessories were spinning.

Anybody have a crankshaft and balancer? Or does anybody need some w210 parts?

02-28-2011, 08:02 PM #3Just got it apart. Both the crankshaft snout and balancer are thrashed. Pretty disappointed. Now I have to decide if I'm going to part out the car or fix this thing.

Aeroturbine muffler, scratch-built 4" stainless exhaust. EGR eliminated, ECM recalibrated, modified rack position feedback circuit. Porterfield RS brake pads, Bilstein sport shocks, VDO EGT, oil and boost gauges.
2000 Ford F250 - 150,000 miles. Current/future mods: DP Tuner 3 map chip, scratch-built high flow intake, high output IDM, open circuit fuel system, ball bearing turbo, South Bend full metal clutch, slotted and drilled rotors. Autometer Sport Comp EGT and boost gauges.
Holy schneikies, that's bad... Sorry to hear it. Ironically, I was fiddling with the bolt on mine yesterday, wondering what size it is...

03-01-2011, 01:03 AM #8Nope. Never touched the harmonic balancer. It makes me sooo mad too because 2 days ago I had the belt off looking for a squeak in the accessories. I thought it was the idler pulley, but I guess I was wrong on that one...

What would be the correct "repair"? Replacing the crankshaft?

I'm parting out the car. Virtually every part is good except the crankshaft and balancer...so disappointing.

03-01-2011, 11:34 AM #10Yes. Replacing the crankshaft would be the only true fix I see. Or a guy could tighten the balancer down, weld it, and go with it. But that's definitely not the correct fix. I'm sure it would be outta balance and the front seal would probably leak....among other things.

03-01-2011, 05:49 PM #15That crankshaft looks like a problem a good machine shop could fix....Irrespective of which type of damper you fit,put on a new one...less vibrations = less damage....vibrations kill your engine.....eventually
