OM606 Crankshaft Bolt
OM606 Crankshaft Bolt
Well I was driving home from school today and I thought the alternator failed...come to find out the harmonic balancer bolt loosened up and none of my accessories were spinning.
I haven't got it apart yet but I'm guessing the crankshaft and pulley are f'd up. For those who have this engine or similar engines check to make sure this bolt is tight!
Just got it apart. Both the crankshaft snout and balancer are thrashed. Pretty disappointed. Now I have to decide if I'm going to part out the car or fix this thing.
Anybody have a crankshaft and balancer? Or does anybody need some w210 parts?
Holy schneikies, that's bad... Sorry to hear it. Ironically, I was fiddling with the bolt on mine yesterday, wondering what size it is...
Here's some pics

The bolt appears to be M18x1.5 and 50mm in length
That sucks! Have you ever done anything with that assembly prior to this failure?
Nope. Never touched the harmonic balancer. It makes me sooo mad too because 2 days ago I had the belt off looking for a squeak in the accessories. I thought it was the idler pulley, but I guess I was wrong on that one...
Terrible luck man...I've never heard of this failure before on a 60x. I recently replaced my crankshaft hub and seal and this make me kind of leary!
What would be the correct "repair"? Replacing the crankshaft?
Yes. Replacing the crankshaft would be the only true fix I see. Or a guy could tighten the balancer down, weld it, and go with it. But that's definitely not the correct fix. I'm sure it would be outta balance and the front seal would probably leak....among other things.
Change old type damper on it, from 603. That 606 damper not good.
So is the crankshaft and damper from a 603 the same as the 606?
So you are saying there is no difference between the 603 crankshaft and the 606? I can replace the 606 crankshaft with a 603?
That crankshaft looks like a problem a good machine shop could fix....Irrespective of which type of damper you fit,put on a new one...less vibrations = less damage....vibrations kill your engine.....eventually

That is good to know! I remember hearing about some differences between the 617 turbo and non turbo crankshafts with nitriding and such.
But if all 603 and 606 cranks are the same then I have more options! Thanks guys!
