Project Ingrid 1980 300SD
Project Ingrid 1980 300SD
This thread is to keep track of my newly purchased SD, Ingrid. This will be my 5th Mercedes diesel, and my 3rd SD Its an addiction.....
She has 194,194miles on the odometer and runs pretty sweet, besides the large amount of grey smoke it produces when accelerating and a pretty bad oil leak(im REALLY hoping its not the rear seal).
Ill take it day by day with her and get her up to good operating condition. First things first it needs some glow plugs asap.
Unfortunetly the body has some rust here and there, especially along the bottom of the rear windshield, and a few small dents..no biggie.
The interior isnt too awful, ive driven in worse.
I havnt done anything to her besides removing the lower foglights, mounting the roofrack for my kayak, and cutting off the muffler, havnt even washed her yet.
Damn rust....
(02-27-2011, 04:50 PM)Jtn190D Looks nice Its strange to see rust from SoCal. Did it come from the North?
Goin to the junkyard this mornin, i havnt been in a few months.
See if i cant grab a 15inch wheel to replace that bundt with.
Does this car look like its been lowered already? Or is it just the 15inch wheels playing tricks on me?

Grey smoke means retarded IP timing! I know!

Just need a 14, 27?mm and breaker bar for the IP bolts and crank bolt. We'll have her timed in no time! Haha

Well If you have a boost gauge then you really don't need the over boost protection... If you don't have a gauge then I'd keep it as it wont let boost go above 16lbs.
Just rip the cap off! haha
Okay i will leave it alone for the time being then.
I made a REAL BONE HEAD move today.
This morning i took of the the injector lines so i can test a GP i was having doubts about. And when i was screwing the lines back on i accidently cross threaded the nut that screws onto the injection pump..
I feel like a total doofus doing somthing so ridiculous.
So the part that the nut screws on, on the IP is fucked.
If i take that off to replace it, that means i need to have the pump put on a bench to get it to run right again..right? I belive sitting right below that is the delivery valve, so id be screwing with that wich i know isnt good.
Im real bummed right now!
No no no! You can remove the piece that the injector line screws onto! You have to remove it and remove the delivery valve when you time the IP. Your good dude. Just stop by the junk yard and grab a new one!!!

Yeah just done loosen the two nuts that are next to it! Those are the ones that cannot be touched IIRC
Sweet, got her all fixed up.
I disconnected the EGR and all related vacume hoses wich seemed to help out on the amount of grey smoke.
I also turned the ALDA all the way out, wich made a slight difference and made the turbo spool up a tad quicker.
Ill get some video up when i get some good tires on her.
I thought w116 SDs didnt have EGR?
(03-14-2011, 09:14 PM)DrewGerhan I thought w116 SDs didnt have EGR?

Now take the ALDA off more max fuel and burnouts!
Not really, only smoke. The ALDA has no effect on power when correctly adjusted.
That was mostly a sarcastic exaggeration
But in all seriousness,
No ALDA on the '81, almost no smoke, Night and day difference in acceleration off the line
Maybe the smoke is so little because I haven't done anything inside the pump yet?
(03-15-2011, 09:58 AM)garage ALDA will probably come off when i get some other things situated.
Capt, i bet she it starts smokin once you take the rack limiter out
I cant wait to take mine out!!

My rack limiter didn't do much at all.
(03-15-2011, 03:01 PM)garage Did you notice anything from the full load screw?

I believe that's what he calls the torque control capsule
The torque control is where I noticed the fuel/ power.
Just max it all out!
All torque control will do is alter the rpm where the fuel starts to get cutoff. It doesn't alter maximum power.
To those reading later, torque control should not be touched. It will cause the engine to not return to idle and not cutoff fuel on deceleration.
Torque control screw was what i was reffering too, but i was just asking dieselboy according to his signature.
So i took out the cruise control, and took off the trim below the taillights and headlights(looks 20x better without the trim)
Now theres going to be a few small holes in the body that are going to need to be filled so i dont get excess moisture in the trunk, so my question is, what brand of body filler should i go with on this??
Ive never done any proper body work, and im not looking for a showroom finish by any means. I bought the car mostly for its engine not its rust riddled body. The only reason im not going to weld them shut, is i just dont care enough about this car to invest that much in its body..rather put money and time into the engine.
Dude, When are we going to have an SD drag race??

(03-23-2011, 11:21 PM)Captain America Dude, When are we going to have an SD drag race??
Battle fuckin Royal for sure! Lets do it!!!
I'll race you on either dirt or road haha, Madd dirt burnouts!
You dont need brakes, The front end of my 126 feels like its gonna come apart when I apply the brakes haha
No beer needed. I'll help a buddy for free
Well then i im pretty sure this challange has to take place on both!
Ha, yeah the front end of this car is pretty shakey when i brake above 50ish. But i have a sticky rear caliper, so i know thats robbing me of power.
Thanks Capt! When we get rid of this gloomy weather imm take you up on it for sure man!
Cool dude. Just hit me up. You still have my number right?
I belive i do.
So today i took ol' Ingrid to a dollar carwash down the road to try an get some grease off from the undercarriage, so i used my trusty mercedes jack to lift up the front passenger side of my car so i could squirt her off with degreaser. As im cranking the jack up, i hear some cracking and i find out this car has even worse rust than i thought.
The hole that the jack goes into rusted out...
Oh no! Come cut the jack holes out of the blue car haha
Nice.
The headlights on these cars looks so weird to me
thats what I meant but didnt wanna say it haha
Where the bleep is the star in the hood ornament??!
Other than that, the black-out looks good.
It didnt come with one, i was thinking bout puttin some crosshairs up there but im not sure yet. I will probably put the star back up oneday.
I think i need to get a pair of yellow headlights from a w123...
Haha the star fell out of my maroon car too!
I have a buddy that welded up a nut on the hood side and can cut me whatever logo I want on his CNC plasma table... Then just weld a stud to the bottom and bam you have any logo any size you want!
