well THERE'S yer problem

two of the glow plugs, with a new one for comparison. i had two new ones on hand, off to kragen to get 2 more. engine is cranking nice and fast but i think those plugs are completely toasted, hopefully that's the only reason it isn't firing up.

after farting around for a while and talking with garage, turns out i had not purged all the air out of the fuel system. because i had replaced the hard plastic lines, and the injector hard lines, there was a TON of air in the system. spent a bunch of time pumping away at the primer pump until no foam came from the return line. after that everything started great!

the glow plugs may not have been to blame after all, but the new plugs are in already now and it can't hurt. i'm going to see if the old ones glow properly at the tips later, maybe they can go into the bins for spares.

I have the "lifetime replacement" champion hoop types...

I think I bought 4, and I've replaced 16...

This engine's getting the collars to upgrade to pencil plugs, it's on the list for the next Rusty order.

Awesome to see this thing with a running engine!
Did you drive it around the block yet or what??

Air in the system is a bitch..a that little inline fuel pump really kicks ass when it comes to that.
I pull Bosch GPs from junkyard cars on the regular, they almost always have a charge and work a good while.

hooking up shifter linkages, bleeding and hooking up the clutch lines, and installing the front half of the driveshaft. also need to drop the exhaust support so i can bolt it up all proper. after that *crossed fingers* it should be able to drive down the road, and just need minor things straightened out.

awesome!

you need to get a hand vacuum pump for further potential air issues, also works great telling you if you have restriction in your fuel line. Mityvac I think is the most common version. I use mine all the time, way more for fuel than for brake bleeding!

shift linkages are all hooked up, had to go to the dealership to get two new ones for $2 each (lost some in the garage). clutch is all bled and working good now.

started putting the front half of the driveshaft in but its being a puta so i said fuck this i'll do it later. might just drop the center support so i can line it all up nicely.

radiator and hoses are all good, let them sit filled overnight and no leaks so far.

parking brake cable (i think thats what it is) is in the way so the driveshaft cant droop enough to make room. i think i may just drop the differential to let me move the whole assembly backwards enough to insert the front of the driveshaft into the back fo the tranny. my other option is loosening the sleeve nuts and compressing the driveshaft, but that would mean i need to go buy a 46mm wrench and a 41mm wrench $$$$$$$$$

that drive shaft was a huge pain in the ass, but once i dropped the dif i was able to get enough clearance to get it in. got the exhaust all bolted up. its too hot out to mess with the exhaust hangar doughnuts and im not even sure if the ones i have are the right size, so i tied the rear of the exhaust up into place really securely for now.

the car is *this* close to being driveable, just need to figure out how to get tools onto the other side of the flex disc bolts so i can torque them down proper. once those are tight, it will be time for a test drive!
in the process of doing all the driveshaft stuff, i discovered my center support rubber is totally thrashed. that will need to be replaced before i do any real driving (i'm sure its ok just to move the car in and out of the garage) which is a bummer.....but at least i discovered it that way rather than having it fail at speed.

oh jeez what did i do now......

tried to take the car out for a drive. something is up with the clutch - it does not engage. the pedal feels fine and normal, but when you let the clutch pedal out, it BARELY seems to be engaged. i was able to do a lap around my neighborhood, but in 1st gear it could not climb up my very gently sloped driveway. it had enough power that i was able to push it with one food and hit the accelerator pedal with the other, and slowly inch into the garage.

what the hell????

no the problem is the clutch is *not* grabbing. if it was not bled i would expect it to be stuck...?

right now i can idle the car at a dead stop with it in first gear and the clutch pedal totally released.

going to have to drop the driveshaft and transmission tomorrow to figure out whats up with the clutch. soooooo annoying after i just wrestled with getting the driveshaft in.

once that is sorted out, i need to get an air filter and mount it / the housing. i need to splice the starter solenoid wire to the new harness. will need to fix up the passenger side paint like i did the driver's side, and paint the passenger side wheels.

other stuff:
-center support needs to be replaced - its rubber is all junky.
-oil pressure gauge line needs to be reattached (engine's line is blocked for now, car's line will get new end put on)
-need to track down a proper 240D throttle linkage assembly. the one i have now is from another model and works but isn't great.
-still need to replace the transmission fluid
-once i've put some time on the regular water in the cooling system, need to drain that and fill it with proper zerex g05. making sure there are no leaks before i pour in $45 of coolant.
-need to verify vacuum system/accesory functions, and troubleshoot whatever issues show up.

i may be selling the car once its driveable. waiting to hear back about a job i interviewed for - if i don't get the job then the car has to go.

if i dont sell, i'll be pouring more love into it to fix the little things that will matter to me. various small dings on the body, new flex discs, new hood ornament, cleaning the carpets, tracking down a crack-free dash, replacing the stereo system, hooking the AC up and charging it. i need to finish my painted valve cover (errors had to be corrected) and then install that.

Hold on to your ass for that center bearing. All the parts dealers in town didn't have it (at least here) and the stealership is the last resort, I got mine online (had to buy the rubber mount and bearing separately) and it cost me 60 bucks before shipping. Cheapest I found on that same site was around 40-50 but I went with the better one because its definitely not a job I'd want to do again any time soon.

damn...and i guess its too late to return them now that they got installed and ran on.....

in other news, i think i figured out my clutch problem. everyone's guesses were wrong! turns out i installed the clutch fork wrong. the little clip that holds one side to the pivot post thing - i didnt realize that was a clip, so i had installed teh fork just sitting on top of that. i guess the clip caused the fork to put pressure on the pressure plate enough to cause my issue. we'll see what happens when i put everything back in.

oh and fuck everything about this hot weather. especially when i'm trying to be good about wearing my coveralls and gloves.

Most clutch systems with fluid leaks fail in the "engaged" mode.
Wire the stop lever to OFF, then hit the starter while in first gear/reverse.
If car moves, you're likely good. Wink
