Caddy Getrag 5 speed
Caddy Getrag 5 speed
So I've been thinking about the manual transmissions options (or lack) we have with the 617. I've seen people using Getrag 265 transmissions and making/modifying bellhousings for other projects. So I did a fleabay search and found a handfull of them for what would seem a reasonable price. Then I found this.

Need to visually rotate this sucker about 92.3 degrees clockwise to make it standing upright.

And then the sticker if anyone wants the numbers.

This is the 5 speed manual out of a 2004 Caddy CTS. So, am I crazy or does that look damn near workable for a 5 speed manual trans? Or would it be just as much work to get this to fit as it would be any other trans? The starter is on the right (also, correct) side for the 617, the transmission mount looks to be in about the correct spot, and it has what appears to be the correct style (but maybe not size) of output flange. If this trans can hold up behind a 2004 Caddy CTS (non-V), it should hold up just fine behind a 617!
Does anyone here have any experience with these transmissions? Anyone have access to one (GM dealer friends) to get measurements? I know these cars are still somewhat new, but this one was on fleabay for $774.95 Buy It Now price.

Looks like there's a six speed manual for a few more $ also.
and plenty of 5 speeds at that same price

Most of the Mercedes 5 & 6 speed are set up with the starters on the drivers side witch wont fit an OM617
Only a very few diesel om616/om617 EURO cars had the five speed with the starter on the passenger side!
The 6spd fits my car because it has an om603. The om60x ,601,602,603,606 and so on have the starter on the LH side
oooooooo, that looks promising
That would be a nice upgrade to the antique side lever getrags!
I wonder how the stick interfaces, or if it can be extended? We still have that irritating shifter 12 inches behind the output flange issue to deal with

I don't believe for a minute that the bolt holess will line right up, but dammit I can dream! LOL
The starter on this transmission is on the passenger side, 617 style.
Winmutts idea of just fabbing a 60X style intermediate plate may end up being the easiest. Did any of the drivers side starter engines have a removable intermediate plate? Or do we just have to fab one ourselves?

here is what i plan on doing to my jeep.
you need 94 and up ax15 trans and the adapter setup from Koch http://mercedesdiesel4x4.com/default.aspx
you need a jeep starter and figure out the output shaft / drive shaft issues.
ax15 will be bulletproof behind an om617
