Engine Swap
Engine Swap
Hello all This is my entro and question. My name is Quinn ,Oceanside, Ca. My 300 SD 1980 had a knock. I found a engine from a 1983. I pulled out the engine and trans last night at work 3.75 hrs. The oil pan I have heard needs to be changed. The sump or the main pan/block lower half. Also oil filter manifold has the oil press. tube thgreaded into it. That also looks like it needs to be changed over. The trans from the 1980 should bolt right up to the 1983 motor. Can anyone correct me onthe above mentioned and please add or give me some advice. I am a auto technition , but this is my first mercedes and I love it . Only owned it since January 2011. Thanks very much Quinn
I'm unclear about what your asking on the oil pan.
The 80 Sd has a mechanical oil pressure line off the the filter housing and the engine you got has a electronic sensor.
The oil filter housings and different so if you want to run your mechanical gauge you will have to swap the filter housing.
Hey thanks I just to the shop and switched housings. My main concerne is time , at work I can't have my personnel car on the rack Tues morning. So I am trying to swap this all in this weekend. The oil pan at the rear looks a lil more beefed up. So the rear cross member might be in the way. I have not set it in there yet. But might have to heat and hammer a dent into it. Am Oallright on this. Has anyone had to do this minor mod Thanks. All else looks pretty damb straight farward.
I haven't noticed that before.
I'll go look at my Sd in a few.
The upper pan is different between the two motors. I do believe you'll need to switch out the pans, I don't think you can achieve the results with a hammer. But you can try.

I set the motor in. The torque convertor houseing does hit the rear crossmember. I thought about shim up the trans mount but did not want to screw w/ any angle for the drive line ,trans. So I broke out the torch and cut dimples so it wound clear. I will take some steel and form it to shape and weld it so as to keep the strength in the tube. But it can be done.So the oil filter stand , engine mounts was about it on the swap. I just have a spagetti of a mess w/ all the vacuum hoses.
