in the market for a used two post, maybe 7500-9000lb capacity. Im thinking under a grand, like 700-900 would be a decent price for a used lift in working condition. Not sure whats a deal though, any thoughts?

I was told by a Rotary Lift installer to never to purchase a used lift unless it was taken down by the installer and inspected properly. I was going to install a Danmar Lift in my garage at home but it is only a mid height lift, raises the car about 4 ft off the ground. I was going to install it in my home garage which does not have an extremely high cieling, but it would be good for my restoration work lifting the body on and off and swapping wheels on my daily drivers. Those lifts run about 2k. If your looking to purchase on a budget I would check with a local lift installation company, they probably have good used and certified ones they can sell you with installation rolled into the price.

Installing it is straightforward, if I find one for a decent price in decent condition and complete, it will be the 5th lift I have personally installed total, and the 3rd used one, (the first 2 post though)

Should be fine and I can inspect the hydraulics, connecting point, and chain for wear on a used one.

The dilemma is right now I can buy an 800 dollar 15 year old 7500 lb lift that is up and operating at the moment, I would be disassembling it and moving it, or I can spend 1500 bucks and buy a new 9000 lb lift.

New anchors and renting a concrete drill would make that about 100 bucks more for either. moving them would be probably renting a truck for 2-300 bucks, not sure if my 20 year old fiberglass leaf springs in my van are up to the 1500 lb job. Big Grin

I say buy what capacity you think you need right now, and make sure the anti-drop ratchets are good.

guy also has some decent tire equipment I might try and get.

Im buying all this stuff with a progressive auto payment. Some bonehead backed into my work van, only denting the passenger door, but the insurance company saw fit to total it out, and paid me 2 grand, like a gift from the gods. I don't have to do jack shit re titling it in this state since its an 89. The state could care less, there is no paperwork. If someone walked up and said, Ill give you 2 grand if you let me hit your van with a sledge once, I would have said yes. Big Grin

Since its unbudgeted for random cash, I intend to blow the entire payment on auto equipment to install in my shared work space for personal and business use.

this is going to be the real trick, putting this back together. This cross beam is 13 feet in the air, and is at least 200 lbs. Since its just me doing this, im going to have to proceed Egyptian style, and build a pyramid frame work out of 2x4s and lift the cross beam slowly up to the top where I can bolt the sucker back together.

I managed to get it apart, load it, then tow it on a trailer to my work space, and off load it without assistance, so after that madness, re-assembly should be easier.

thats pretty interesting, apparently you sink threaded inserts in the concrete for the maxjax? Then you have to bolt it down? I wonder what the inserts look like.

The legs on mine are 4x the size, I envy that woman wheeling it away

Its up! Big Grin

Now to install power for it. Had to go up between the rafters, and its pretty close to the roof over on the wall side, but it fits!

I will have to cut off and re-weld the safety wire a little lower, its the same height as the rafters

This 3500sf shop space was a decent deal since im repairing tons of problems with the building for reduced rent, and it is immediately next to a pizza place, like 5 feet separates the doors, which delights in being open till 4 am 365 days a year. So much for this years resolution of losing weight.

The defining problem with the building is a massive roof issue. you can see the slope of the rafter inwards as the lift sits flat on the floor and is level. The building is 100+ years old, used to be a support building for the mill that used to be nearby. Its three spaces, a pizza parlor, my space, and what used to be a porno store all with minimal sloped roofs that meet at a 1x3 enormous wooden beam that is suffering from some pretty substantial rot. Its been shored up pretty well, and the externals of the roof have been redone, so its not leaking, but the structure is essentially shit. Im building some scrap wood columns to shore up the falling rafters on that side just in case we get a lot of snow this winter. Other than that though, its an awesome space, perfect for my business of shipping and receiving.

Once i get around to painting the walls, ill post a before and after. The previous needle head tenant left the place looking like a crack den.

Hooked up power yesterday, going to top off hydraulics today and test it on the POS golf you can see in the pic after todays deliveries are done

Its got racheting ladder locks, only thing I don't like is that I have to approach and pull tabs on both arms to unlock it.

I might try and upgrade the existing unlock mechanism with some air pistons so I can unlock both sides from the control post.

Working on the air system in the space later this week. Lots and lots and lots of piping on the ceiling from multiple different previous tenants. I might be able to use all these different lines and get air almost everywhere without too much new pipe

Good deal on the used lift. I've often wondered if a good used lift would be a smart buy or not. Having a forklift on-site sure would be a big help. I could probably borrow one from work...hrmmm.

What are the details on the compressor? Brand, model, etc. I love big, old, slow speed, quiet compressors that make a ton of air.

I have an old Quincy 325 from the late 1960's. It's a BEAST - I currently have it all apart to rebuild it. Some of the parts are spendy and the hydraulic unloader setup is slightly more complicated than it has to be...but after I rebuild it...I may as well put it in my will - they're rated for like 50,000hrs. Aside from some slight scoring in the cylinders and a worn wrist pin bushing on the high pressure cylinder...it was in good shape, save for some internal corrosion from the complicated cylinder head design.

Im trying to determine if its designed to bleed down slowly, or if is a problem, because it loses pressure over about 4 hours when up at 200psi, and its bleeding from a pop off looking valve up on the compressor itself, not from a loose connection. has not been a real problem, but it has to run for about 15 minutes each morning to pump back up.

   

yeah, these old compressors are nuts, I havent even bolted it down to the floor, barely moves when running

The flywheel on my Quincy runs at 921RPM and the motor is 1736RPM based on my $26 Harbor Freight Tools laser guided, digital photo sensor tachometer. Cool I'd be interested to see what your pump runs at.

Pretty sure that pressure bleed off is correct/normal.

If I'm right that valve that you tapped on with the small tube going back to the pump is a check valve. The check valve holds the pressure in the tank from the pump and the little tube allows the pressure to bleed off from the pump side of the check valve to reduce start up load. No air pressure on the pump lets the electric motor get going easier.

I'm in agreement with waz. Your pump looks like it has some sort of hydraulic actuated unloader on it (similar to the Quincy, but yours looks very nice and simple...unlike the Quincy...).

With a mechanic's stethoscope, you should be able to hear that check valve clicking away when the pump is running.

However, I have found a cheaper space thats better in a brand new building, so Im pretty psyched. Current landlord will be receiving a letter from the city and from my lawyer about the cesspool health code violation, and that I want my security deposit back.
