I know I'm not crazy, and I HAVE seen these.

It's an air-water intercooler that looks like a chunk of regular charge piping, but has a bunch of straws that the air flows through, that are surrounded by the water.

I saw it on a website a few months back, had a black background iirc.

I'm not looking for one of those useless "we took a chunk of square core and shoved it in a section of tube" deals, or the box ones.

I also know it's not a laminova core.

I kept telling myself I'd bookmark it, but never did...

I think I saw something like that on LandCruisers (Australian manufacturer).
The 4.2 l also have a cross pipe over the valve cover like the 60x.

these were aftermarket, aluminum, and iirc anodized red or orange on the outside.
I'll look into the landcruiser setup

EDIT: Found the ones I think you're referring to Tom, those are made by "PWR" and aren't the ones I was looking at before.

Look like a transmission cooler on a big truck lol. But anodized.

By your description, sounds like a marine style heat exchanger. I am not sure how efficient it would be for cooling charge air. It's meant for cooling fluids. They sure flow good, though. I thought of using one years ago & talked to the diesel tech at the boat yard I worked at (formerly a jet/diesel Rolls Royce man) & he told me it would "Have to use bloody nitrogen to be worth the space".... Yeah, he is british.

I don't really think that unit could be too efficient. The restriction at the inlet & having the body at the same diameter as the charge piping? With a marine heat exchanger, the diameter more than triples so as to not restrict flow.... It sure is pretty, though...
Check out http://www.sen-dure.com/ for ideas, products & ratings. The company you are referring to probably uses one of Sen Dure's cores & makes their own housing.
I would think that some form of disruption of airflow to allow for all of the air contacting the surface area would be nessecary for cooling efficiency.

Now, a marine heat exchanger might cool well if you use your air conditioning direct or to cool water flowing through.

Yeah you look into one side of it and it looks like a bunch of small straws inside.

I wish I had a picture of it. I seem to remember seeing one around on the net too....
