Hi, wondering if the overall length of a 717 type 5 speed is the same for Single Mass FW's as compared to Dual? Does the size of the input shaft change the length of the combined engine and tranny package? (ie does the longer input shaft make for a longer tranny/engine combo?) Thinking about what to do with my 86 300E 5-speed, I have considered an OM603.911 for assumed simplicity. This is a commuter car and I hear some of the best Gas Milage figures to come out of the W124 body style was this combo. Since getting that engine is a bit tough vs. an OM606, I am looking at the possibilities. If I can leave the entire drivetrain in the Original location, it would help tremendously. The OM606.910 seems like a good fit. Hoping that the parts required to get an OM603 are the same to get the 606 in instead. Motor mounts, engine brackets rear engine mounts etc. Any electronics to worry about other than EDS? Any thoughts would be great. Thanks Clip

I can't answer your main question but it sounds like you're saying om606's are easier to come by in the Bay Area than OM603's.
I would think the opposite is the case. I see 603's available more often and usually for significantly less $.

I would think the opposite is the case. I see 603's available more often and usually for significantly less $.

From what I have read all of the OM603 mounts should bolt to OM606

Including the om603 mechanical injection pump!

The shorter shaft trans shouldn't be shorter itself either. So you're going to use dualmass? Why?

I got a single mass flywheel made for a duel mass transmission so I can put the short shaft 6spd transmission in my 300sdl

The input shafts are different lengths.

The single mass flywheel has the input shaft that goes through the flywheel into the crankshaft where the pilot bearing is with a spacer behind it and a cap on top.

The dual mass flywheel has the pilot bearing inside the flywheel there is no spacer or cap.

I don't believe it is possible to use a single mass flywheel with a dual mass transmission because there is not enough room for the input shaft to go through the flywheel.

hi, just for some feedback, i am using a 5 puk paddle clutch on my om605 with standard dual mass flywheel and so far is taking 368hp. I have only been out drifting once but have done about 150 dyno runs. I will keep you posted on how it lasts. I am not a fan of dual mass flywheels but it was a cheaper option for me to stick with it. They seem strong compared with BMW and VAG.

Hey guys thanks for the input! Just so we are on the same page, I am wondering about the OM606 replacing the gasser. The concern is the overall installed length of a SM 717.430 that is OEM to my 86 300E when connected to the OM606. I want to keep any fabbing to a minimu if possible. i guess I should have asked it the swap is Plug and Play with the right OEM part #'s? Seems it should. Also wondering if the M103 Flywheel is larger enough for the 606? I think the clutch diameter shoud be OK. Any other insights on the Swap are welcomed!
