Bought a 88 300D on Craigs, but has a totalled radiator in it. Is a good 4hr drive away so would rather fix it and drive it back than trailer it back. I have a 5cly 300SD parts car and was wondering if anyone knew if it would fit in the 88 or not. Just need it to work for about 4 hours so it can be cobbled together and driven back. I would try to source one at the junk yard, but need to go pick it up on friday or else I have to wait a couple weeks to go and get it. So the question is would it be doable to put the older radiator in the new car just for temporary use.

Thanks a bunch

Should fit in, iirc the only difference is core thickness, turbo being thicker than non-turbo.

I can be wrong, don't take everything I say as verbatim, please fact-check first.

The difference is w126 vs w124 chassis I would look on the net for dimensions on both and check to see if the outlets are even close

I could not make the om617 rad from a 1985 300SD w126 fit my 1987 300SDL w126 with the om603

I got my rad off car-part.com and had it shipped for $100

w124 is definitely way different. I assume you meant 78.

Sorry, I'm new to mercedes cars and don't have the correct lingo down yet. I'm hoping a radiator from a 5cyl 300SD sedan will fit in a 6cyl (300TE?) wagon.

willbehere4u, why did it not fit? where the outlets too far apart or was something getting in the way of it sitting properly in the cavity or did the fan hit the radiator?

I can bring extra long radiator hoses and as long as the hood closes and the fan doesn't hit it, I think it will work for my temporary purposes.

Thanks for the help guys

P.S. attached some pics of my old rig just to show I'm not some kind of Mercedes poser enthusiast.

Here's a pic of both I was using stock hoses but the transmission lines where to far off as I remember

The om603 300sdl on the left and the 300sd om617 on the right

The om617 is about 5-6 inches narrower than the om603 because of the engine oil cooler witch might help putting it in a w124

The the om603 SDL has it's oil cooler on the RH behind the bumper not right next to the radiator

nice mog

The w124 radiator not the same as the SDL's. It's short and wide, with the end tanks on the sides. Pretty sure the 617 radiator is too tall to fit under the hood. Plus, if this is a gasser, both the inlet and outlet are on the driver's side. Probably just a matter of hose for you.

The 603 124 radiator is a one off. I paid ~$250 for mine from rusty @ buymbparts.biz. DO NOT go cheap on the cooling system for a 603.

BTW if that is really an 88 I am pretty sure it would have to be a euro delivery. You should try to get a hold of the datacard for it. Post up in projects with pics of car.
