First thanks winmutt!!

then i dident really know where to stick this so i figured this was the best place.

so here i go lol. im phill and I may soon be a owner of a merc.

Specifically a 1987 w124 300d with a om603 turbo in it.

I just had a few questions before going through with it.

1. They want 900 dollars i assume thats pretty good?- read rest.

2. What are common problems with these cars? what should i specificaly check for for when going to test drive / look at it?

its an auto obviously, i dont think they gave the om603 turbos manuals in the US.

the guy says the motors good trannys good but has faded paint and other cosmetic issues. tear in leather in seats etc.

and some body rust.

how are these things with rust?

any help would be greatly appreciated. i really do want to buy this car but if it wont be worth it then ill have to wait till another deal comes my way.

Thanks a ton guys im really hoping I get this car!

These are great cars! and may people have converted them to manual transmissions

Things to look out for are head casting number **** ** 18 ** by the 2-3 injector from the front
you want a casting number above 18-21 replacement any 14-16 are prone to cracking if they have ever gotten hot!

Check to see if the upper radiator hose is already pressurized when its still cold or immediately after starting before it gets warm that will tell you if the head is cracked and pressurizing the cooling system!

also look in the oil for any signs of water or milky oil

The OM603 have a cast iron block and aluminum head but they are much more powerful compared to the older 300d with the 3.0 five cylinder OM617
the om603 will last a very long time if taken car of 400k +

I bought my 87 300sdl totaled for $600 + towing charges so if it moves under its own power I'd say it's a deal!

plus if the engine ever dyes it will give me an excuse to get an OM606 to put in it's place

So I went and took it for a test drive today. A little dissapointed. The car runs and shifts fine but theres no power. Makes me think the turbos blown I felt no spool or anything.

The underside of the body wasent bad a little rust on the corners near the wheel wells.

Un fortunatly the intake manifold was a 14 number. So thats a bummer. The hydro lifters dident sound very good. And the interrior was pretty rough. Seat dident move so thats an issue because I couldent drive very comfterably

the only thing that makes me still want it alot is its got so much potential. And he lowered the price for me. From 900 to 700.

Power could be related to some vacuum lines I had a bunch of vacuum leaks and the ALDA wasn't getting boost so it never enriches the fuel mixture! fixed that and bam more power than I could imagine!

By pass the over boost protection solenoid on the firewall. The hose runs from the manifold to the solenoid to the grey box on the IP known as the ALDA. Googling will explain this. Dont worry about the power, its there.
Quote:The underside of the body wasent bad a little rust on the corners near the wheel wells.
Depending where you live this can be a deal breaker. Down here in the south I expect zero rust on my cars.

What do you mean by not sound very good. As long as they were not clacking you are good to go. Ignore what everyone says bad about the #14 heads. If it made it this far its going to keep going. Plenty of original heads on cars with 400k and up. A #17 can be found pretty easily from the SDL's. Of course you want an 18-21 but really its not a deal breaker at that price.

here are some pics.

i have done a good amount of research and planned on adjusting/ cleaning the ALDA or removing it. i hear it does wonders. I think i would also try to adjust the timing on the IP. couldent hurt.

i live in maryland with every single season being intense. lots of snow rain etc. rust is common and there wasent that much

the best way to describe the sound is the engine sounded like 2nd car in this video

The second car in that video sounds like it needs the injectors rebuilt not an uncommon thing at that mileage it can cause an excessive clack/smoke at idle if they are worn not a big deal

A new a set of tips and nosils are around 100-120 bucks and if you can do it you self It doesn't cost anything if you have some descent tools other wise you can send them out to be rebuilt for not to much.

I had never done it before but there was a whole article about how to do it.
http://www.dieselgiant.com/mercedesinjec...eplace.htm

also my car was making a lifter tick when I got it so I ran some BG 209? engine flush through it and some fresh synthetic oil quieted it right up!
