Ok...I am a bit dumbfounded that we cannot resolve this. I went to a reputable local shop and they seemed willing but not knowledgeable. They have the best bosch machine for rotary pumps but not inline. Maybe we can dedicate a thread to the resolution of this issue...here are my thoughts:

There is enough interest in this that it seems that once we found a place to take on the task, they could make quite a bit of money once it is figured out. That said, I would be willing to chip in some cash, as I'm sure others would, for some shop to piddle with a project.

I don't understand why we couldn't get the data we need from one of the willing people overseas, glean any knowledge from him, and/or give our source his contact info to set the pump up. Maybe we could send him some funds for his time?

I am sure we are willing to pay $1200-$1500 to get a pump done and avoid the overseas thing...I have a machinist friend who can figure out the external adjustment part I am certain.

Let's figure this out...are we Americans only good at War and occupying other countries while ours is in a downward spiral to ruin?

I meant to add more to that...they seemed knowledgeable, but not about the older pumps...the shop was Williams Diesel in Ocala, Florida. They were very helpful and the guy is going to get back to me soon. I want to to find that guy that is excited like we are about what here in the states would be a unique car to tune up!

I called the local shop, turbodieselelectric and they were not interested.

There is a guy here locally that does performance tuning. said he could do it but he outsources it to some other guy. Id rather go to a reputable shop than some random fly by night guy/

My local shop, BECS Pacific, just completed the MW pump install of tomnik's 7mm Holly elements (Plungers and Barrels, or P's & B's as BECS calls them) for STD members kmaser and SurfRodder, they will be shipped out to them this week.

I originally negotiated a group price for the install of Chinese 8mm MW elements, but the acquisition of those elements fell through. They still offered the same price to kmaser and SurfRodder with tomik's elements and was quoted around $500 for the rebuild of their pump, plus hard parts if needed and shipping costs.

I coordinated the submission of their pumps on their behalf and both members supplied the elements.

Hopefully, we'll get some performance feedback from them when they are able to install the modified pumps in their vehicles.

In rebuilding a M or MW pump, they are able to get larger elements, but they are factory Bosch units. They are very expensive and for an example, I was quoted on genuine Bosch MW 8mm at $250-$300 per element (prices could change depending on exchange rate).

The pumps from folks wanting to be rebuilt should be sent in complete. They ran into a problem with acquiring some hard parts with SurfRodder's pump because it arrived in pieces from dervtuning's botched install. It ended up the parts were NLA and obsolete. So hence it took so long for the first pump to get done.

Feel free to contact Kris. Tell him Richard with the "MW" Mercedes sent you.

That is good news. Maybe someone can send an extra 603 pump and some 7.5 elements and get the ball rolling...then get the pump to someone like Dave with dyno access and experience I don't have. They can report back and then we can get a run of pumps set up. I don't have a pump or tomniks elements but I'll chip in some cash.

Also...am I correct to think that a pump can be tuned to perform better as a daily driver or as a track tune? I want a 250-300 daily driver decent spooling car.

My local shop was initially interested but that interest quickly went away when it looked like they were only going to make a couple hundred dollars on fitting the elements to my electronic pump.

I think $500 is a fair price for a shop to fit my parts and adjust the idle quantity and EOD.

It isn't quite that simple...with $12-1500 in hand, we still dot have a shop that we know can produce a solid pump upgrade...unless of course we hear back from these guys that just got pumps done.

100k. They are fancy and do many things many times over. If you look at whats required for an M/MW pump not all that much is required for a few runs. All you need to be able to do is run 3200rpm at speed for a specific amount of time and read how much fuel is collected in that time. Really you just have to have the IP at speed and then collect fuel for a specific amount of time and then average out the quantity delivered.

I need to figure out just how much torque an IP requires to run at 3200rpm. Maybe a bit of experimentation is necessary

Torque is going to be fairly static, its the gearing required to get a motor to run at 3200rpm that needs to be considered.

So when are we going to here about the outcome...How much did it cost these guys for the pump rebuild/performance upgrade.

Whats the estimated HP improvment and with what else being required...very interested!

Sorry I don't have that information. Perhaps tomnik could tell us or kmaser or SurfRodder can chime in.

I can say I was very impress with the Holly P's and B's tomnik created. Very high quality, high tolerances and visually noticeable on potential increased output volume of fuel compared to stock.

There was a threat a while back where a guy used his engine as the test bench by disconnecting one cylinder at a time and running it at different rpm! The only draw back is you have to pull the pump for every adjustment and re test it!

Thinking along those lines ^^^, a VW rotary pump is run off the cam belt.
Why not push the power steering pump aside, make temporary mount for another IP and run it off the power steering accessory belt on a 616/617. You can keep the existing IP to run the engine and calibrate the new IP.

Just thinking out loud.....

I actually thought about that, DV. In fact, I thought about an OM617 NA test bench since i have an extra OM617 NA. I could strip every ancillary off of it and run just the extra pump. Just need a fine tune throttle adjustment and a tach on it and bam, instant way to spin that IP up to speed.

Hi,

beside the bench (more or less big drive with much rotating mass to provide a smooth run as the torque is very uneven when rotating a pump, accurate/stable rev and rev counter, then test oil supply with constant temperature and pressure,...)
it needs the understanding of governor adjustment.
I personally tend to do all on my own but for me it makes no sense to build my own bench and not even to hire a bench as I have no clear idea how to adjust the governor.
I am already at the point to pay for element swap and adjustment. Send the pump to a specialist, get it back, install it and go.
I have several pumps that were done "cheap" (by different shops) but only one of them runs well.
Either you can convince OM616 to do the job or you go to an already proven shop, like the mentioned BECS Pacific or Gus from Pacific Fuel Injection (SF) or you send your pump to Europe.
Remember the mess with Dervtuning at that time...

Output: I personally don't know yet as I run stock turbo for some reason.
But take the numbers of mantahead i.e.

I'll be the Guinea Pig. I have a spare, complete M pump (from an OM603) with 5.5mm elements and I want fuel and lots of it for my OM606 build. I'd use the presumably good M pump that is currently on the OM606.910 - but I need that temporarily so I can get the car on the road and quit driving my Dodge/Cummins 450+ miles per week.

Tomnik: How quickly can you get me a set of Holly elements? I can PayPal you the money today...and then I can send the pump out to Bakersfield, CA. I like what I'm seeing with this shop so far. It could be smoke and mirrors...but at least they're nearby to one of our members for any potential neck wringing that might need to happen. Wink

I was in contact with dieselmeken almost two weeks ago, but he has since stopped replying to my emails. Perhaps he's on vacation - folks in the Nordic countries will take off a whole month at a time. Must be nice!

Also - just got my RIV tool in the mail yesterday...so I'm good to go to start swapping pumps.

Note: Please use the 'email' option for getting in touch as I don't get a chance to login to STD as often as I like. I can get back to anyone nearly immediately via email or phone.

Matt

Matt, you want the Floyd 7.5 elements for the M pump, not the Hollys which I believe are for the MW pump.

1998 MB E300 - 194,000 miles. Current/future mods: 7.5mm pump elements, Holset HX40 Turbo feeding Eaton M90 supercharger through custom fabbed intake system. Aeroturbine muffler, scratch-built 4" stainless exhaust. EGR eliminated, ECM recalibrated, modified rack position feedback circuit. Porterfield RS brake pads, Bilstein sport shocks, VDO EGT, oil and boost gauges.

2000 Ford F250 - 150,000 miles. Current/future mods: DP Tuner 3 map chip, scratch-built high flow intake, high output IDM, open circuit fuel system, ball bearing turbo, South Bend full metal clutch, slotted and drilled rotors. Autometer Sport Comp EGT and boost gauges.

Yes the Holly P's & B's are for the MW Pump. I misquoted the size of the Holly's. They are 6.5mm, not 7mm. Unfortunately, tomnik no longer has these available at this time.

As stated by E300TSC, the Floyd P's & B's are for the M pump and 7.5mm in size.

I sent Tomnik a pm yesterday and he said he said his supplier missed a lip or something on the 7.5s, but he expects them back in a couple weeks.

Holset, there is a good writeup on pump removal somewhere...contact GSXR AKA Dave and I imagine he will help you out too. He has been a great resource to me!

(08-27-2011, 04:04 PM)E300TSC I (cough, cough) also have a set of 7mm that I'm selling (for Tom). They should be good for 500 HP.

I believe they are Bosch or Myna but Tom can tell you more, pricing and whatnot.

With any luck I will be purchasing those shortly.

Since the 7mm elements are spoken for, I'm going to hold out until the 3rd Generation Floyd elements are available in about two weeks. I don't think my 722.435 is going to hold much more than 150hp...so installing the M-pump with bigger elements will be part of Phase 2 of my project. Smile

Matt
