Anyone built a generator out of a car engine?

Looking to figure out how its done

I have a 1981 VW 1.6 diesel and id like to adapt it to this application since its a good engine and is sitting unused. I don't really know anything about generators, anybody have any experience?

i have seen datsun 1.2 liters with this kind of generators,and one time with a 3 cyl from a suzuki forza,i think with that engine you have a cheap running gen set,quiet and pretty durable
