Anybody know anything about a golf/rabbit n/a? Can I turbo it? Or will it melt?
Some guy has been trying to sell an '81 on CL for a while and now he has dropped it to $400.
And he says he has somehow gotten the timing belt out of time. Lame.
Totally want this car. But I want a deal.

There were factory available turbo 1.6 engines around that year range. They were in some diesel quantums and a few other models I think. Don't know If the engine is internally diferent, but it sure looks identical to the NA. Know a guy locally who has one I've been trying to buy for years, but I've helped him with airlocks a couple times.

As far as timing the engine, I can't remember if its interference or not, but they are just about the easiest engine to time out there. Had a couple rabbits that I did the belts on.
There is a diesel 1.6 version of that "how to keep your vw alive" book that effectively tells you how to time the engine using a popsicle stick to hold the cam shaft and such. Borrowed a copy of that to do mine

If you can verify if its interference or not, then id totally buy it

1974 240D 617 turbo swap, W201 5-speed, in the works project
1983 240D 616 stock, DD
1989 Chevy Astro, 617 turbo swap, T5 5-speed, 4.56 diff, work van

ill try and get a pic of that turbo 1.6 quantum engine for you, maybe some numbers off the turbo. Its owned by an infuriating hippie married to a good friend of mine. He is really really annoying to deal with, has no concept of maintenance or proper care or spending a dime on either, and is sitting on a very rare car that was in great shape. Unfortunately, not anymore.

Would be kinda cool. If the valves haven't slammed through the pistons. Just the fabric interior is kinda gross. And I doubt I can even afford another car. Would have to flip it. I work my arse off just to have extra monies for whiskey and rollies.
Got me dreaming of a 1.9 turbo drivetrain in a SL convertable Wink
