I read the diff info thread and I'm going to be out on the hunt for a 2.65
Where are there numbers and will they say 265 somewhere in there? Or is there a range of numbers to look for?

2.65 in a 123? From what? I think that would be pretty rare since most people jump to 2.47.

Step one would be to know what models to look for, looking at the numbers themselves is a pita.

The exact ratio is stamped on the diff (covered in dirt usually), so yes you'd see "265" on there.

Mine came from a w116 450sel 6.9. They offered it in a non LSD too in some of the 450sel's that didn't have the 6.9.

Drivers side bottom corner. I take my knife and scrape the crud off to read them on all the sel cars and SL cars at the jy to look for another for my friend.

The w116 diff will work in a w123 but you will need to change the input yoke and the axles. The 116 is a little wider also you may need to flip over the rear mount.

A 2.65 rear is very rare to find. There are probably more 2.65 LSD out there then an open 2.65. Which means the only car to get it from is the 6.9 as dieselboy stated. Good luck in finding one. An easier solution is the 2.47.

I heard 2.47 was too short. What is best to replace 3.07? Maybe a little larger than stock tire diameter eventually once these 14s wear out and I find some 16s or 17s

I may use 2.47 is fine but everyone said that\'s too sort! What is best if there is no 2.65? 2.88 or 2.47?

2.88 is not that hard to find, they're on '85s.

Well, the one in the car reads

115 651 32 08

so just what is that supposed to mean? Supposedly it is an 82 300d and the tach occasionally will read 3100 at 75ish mph FWIW

Pulled a 2.88 today with the help of a friend. Kinda hard to get off, prolly even harder to get it in properly. We'll spend a while cleaning it up and looking into how to install one. Also got an intake manifold with no egr but it does have input for the ccv. But it was from a na car so no port for the alda/boost gauge.
There were 2 cars there like that, with ada on the pump.
Anyway, longer runners to each cylinder than on my shorty intake. FMIC is on the way too so lots of fun projects on the way soon.
Wink

Don't forget to grab the speedometer for it matches the differential ratio.

Part number on the face. 123 542 27 57.

Using your original speedometer will not show the correct speed.

Got the 2.88 in today thanks to serverman777 for turning wrenches and bringing the air ratchet. We'll have to see how she drives/shifts with the new gearing.
Waiting on that gasket to form up before filling it up and driving.

Is there a list of speedo part numbers and what they mean?

I have ones that are

123 542 18 57 120mph
123 542 85 01 85mph
and the one in the car I haven't checked it

Only 123 542 27 57 will be accurate with your new diff. You can however go to a speedo shop or somewhere online and get a Ratio Adapter that is figured by percentage your speedometer is off.

Good news. That is the speedo that's in the car already.
Odd though, I checked my speedo against an iPhone with the 3.07 diff and larger than stock tires.
Seemed to be on then.

The tach only ever reads intermittently. Though today it started to work after I twisted a few of the fuses trying to get the radio back on. Anyway, tach is way lower on the highway and car feels better/faster.
I wonder how the hell I can measure my mpg. I had been pretty well around 24mpg going by whatever the 123 542 27 57 speedo/odometer was measuring at the last gearing.

The larger tires will make that speedo more accurate on your old 3.07. Installing the 2.88 will make it off a bit without the stock size. You need to check if the odometer is true to figure out your mileage and check your Tach Amp, as it maybe defective if it's only working intermittently.
