its finally home guys! my 1987 300d turbo
im excited to start working on it. its gonna be a blast!

im sure it was posted here somewhere but i cant find it. does anyone nkow the power handling of a stock om603? i know they can take a pretty good amount stock but what is it like 200? 250? 300?
I've seen 300-400hp on some of the fin's cars
stock is 148 hp and 200 torque
Tuning with a stock pump can get you close to 180-200hp after that you would need a custom injection pump lot's of money
200 hp and 250 lb is pretty darn good in one of these cars! for reliability and fun
Yea thats what I thought it was around.
Some bad news though. I was wrenching around today. And here are the results
My turbo has noticable shaft play.
The engine has bad blow by.
There was almost no collant. (what do I use?)
And the oil looksike it hasent been changed since it was made
So im thinking its gonna be a pita.
Head might be cracked.. Ill get a vid up of idle later.
So over all pretty bummed. :/
And to top everything off the rear windows dont work any more(they did yesterday lol)
Im feeling a little defeated. :/
yea yea. but i paid 700 and could probably get 500 scraping it and then get working parts out of it and sell em.
im hoping its not a cracked head. ill see what happens in a few days.
ill pull the alda. run seafoam through it. change oil fill coolant. then see whats what.
p.s. i feel like the car never actually hits boost. -_-
The shaft will get some good play the more miles they have on em. Not to worry as long as the compressor doesn't hit the housing, and the shaft doesn't chatter...
The last 617a I bought a quite a bit of blowby .... ALL of it went away after I started driving it... Give her the ole Italian tune up! She will like it!
Use regular coolant
Run some Sea Foam then change the oil
You could definatly get 700 back in parts. If the motor if junk maybe you could swap in another? My windows conk out all the time, most important is drivetrain and safe brakes, steering, et cet.
Get a box of nitrele gloves, that grease is the pits.

A box of 100 xl gloves is under $10 on amazon. They're thin and your hands will sweat while they're on. Then when they rip or you take them off your hands are soft like a lady's
A bum turbo is a great excuss for an upgrade turbo/exhaust!
yea trust me lol. i wouldent be replacing this turbo with another stock one im thinking holset hx35. cuz im trying to be slightly conservative lol.
but at the same time i would really like to be 100% sure on whats going on. i dont want to buy a turbo to put it on a blown head or something like that.

So seafoams gonna be tommorow, hoping it cleans alot out. Probably gonna do some in the gas, oil, and fuel. Hopefully fix some shit.
You said regular coolant? I know 50/50 but does brand matter. Should I try to find better stuff?
I'd just do green 50/50 mix. I always use distilled water or buy the pre diluted stuff.
When I got my car I temporally hooked up the line from the intake manifold directly to the ALDA and sure enough I got all of my power back! you can actually feel the turbo
after finding the leaks I put it back to stock and it still has all of its power
I sure hope that that will work ill by pass that stupid thing. Hopefully I dont have too many leaks I think there
Might be a leak from the turbo to the part of the intake manifold that sticks over the engine.
So i by passed the over boost solenoid. i think..
it feels better but i will floor it and it will pull great in first. then it shifts to second and holds basically at 2k ish and dosent feel like its pulling any harder.
i couldent do the seafoam through the injectors because i needed lines and a bottle to suck the shit up. ill get that soon.

You should get the injector line clips mine where all missing along with the brackets and the line rubbed through each other really sucks
Also make sure to bypass that y near the ALDA so it's a direct shot from intake to alda
as far as the brackets i may have a few the plastic clips you can get from some online parts stores, or a Mercedes dealer

look around for diesel fuel these lines can and will break or rub through with out the little clips and brackets and cause a miss fire on that cylinder!
For a cheap temporary fix I would run to a junk yard and grab the little plastic clips off of the brake lines near an abs unit on almost any car
I found some really nice looking ones on a newer volvo
I have at least 2 extra of the small metal brackets for the rear three cylinders new from Mercedes! they where $5 each
and the big front bracket was like $18

and i was wondering what went there. i saw bolts but nothing there. i think i managed to find a few of them. they guy before me took
em off i guess. probably not a very smart person. lol.
also saw black smoke for the first time guess somethings working right.
also managed to fix my non working driver and passenger seat adjustments. but now the speakers konked out lol. every time i fix something something else goes wrong.
I also have a rebuilt stock turbo I may sell if you decide you want a stock one I change my mind and want to get a euro manifold and holset after I finish my 6spd conversion
also the only thing the vacuum controls is the transmission so Evan if it is disconnected it will cause sever harsh shifts bad for it you can adjust the way you drive so it doesn't chirp every shift for temporary testing at least
no way. i need a hx35 on this baby lol. stock turbo will do untill i can figure all the shit out. once its running right ill get to the bigger turbo.
euro manifold is the one that makes sense right? not up and around and then down again with stupid egr stuff right?
but i would love a six speed. thats aloooooot of work and money though. maybe once im on my own with a good paying job and i want to make this into a drift car lol.

haha! yea it looks nice. but i have a leak in my exhaust manifold so even with a new turbo it wont run as it should cuz its spewing exhaust
gasses all over the engine bay.
Also all of the vacuum stuff on the passenger side of the engine can and should be disconnected! It's all EGR,ARV bullshit
ARV= air recirculation valve that doohickey on the turbo that dumps boost out like a blow of valve but not in a good way
If you search om603 vacuum stuff like arv,egr and what not like blue flying Saussure on google you can fine alot of good articles online
I plan on removing every thing except the power breaks and cruise control on my car after the M.T. conversion
that exhaust leak could cause week boost put a gauge on there it should be reading 10-12 psi
ill have to do a boost gauge later. i have things that take priority. if i can improve stuff with getting rid of shit and cleaning etc. then im all for it.
and im glad you said something cuz i was about to ask about that stuff. if i could i would like to make the intake as unrestricted as possible.
ie: getting rid of everything except essentials. pcv, filters etc.
god egr and arv is lame.. lol.
Also the AFM under the air filter and the eECU are only there to control the idle other wise the engine is still fully mechanical
People have removed all off that stuff and turned the idle up on the injection pump with out any real problems! and making it fully mechanical!
So about my blow by. Do the piston rings go bad on the 603 normally? It dosent
Leak oil or coolant. As far as I can tell they stay seprate. The old ass oil probably isent helping with
The blowby.
I think im going to swap it out for 15w-40 turbo diesel synthetic.
So besides blow by and still down on power everything is great, sure suspension squeeks and what not
but I dont mind.

Since the oil change I feel like its a little smoother and blow by is slightly better.

and i took my strainer out.....after buying a 46mm socket. -_- it came out when i tried to remove the 19mm barb...
So ive been driving the car more and more. it keeps seeming slightly better each time i drive it. maybe im finally starting to blow the crap out. who nkows though.
but a question for you guys.
after a full throttle run i will get a buzz like my doors open. but nothings open i cant think of anything that would cause the problem.
unless there is some sort of light that should be accompanying the buzz. any ideas?

so starts a season of good. due to a bunch of crap i couldn't really pull things like injectors and valve cover because i needed the car to be running.
but now i can have it sit there and hopefully sometime soon ill be pulling the injectors and cleaning them and then pulling the valve cover off to do timing. wish me luck!
today i heard something that could give me another lead to whats wrong. i heard a dripping sort of sound coming from the car after i drove it.
im thinking stuck injector. could explain my white smoke on start up. or it could be coolant getting pushed back through a crack in the head :/
when i pull the injectors how can i tell if they are stuck?

There is that old test that everyone talks about. Whilst your motor is running go under the hood and crack open the lines one at a time. Trying to identify where a problem might be. I've done it myself but never gleaned and useful information.

Something like the idle doesn't change when you disconnect 1 of the injectors. Or see what each one does.
I have always found that I can't tell WTF is going on when I disconnect them one by one. ymmv

i recommend to do a lubro moly diesel purge first and then whatever you want,thats the good German stuff for sick diesels
i tried a bottle of sea foam. i guess it cant hurt to do a diesel purge. after that though. ill pull everything.
Seafoam is pretty awesome stuff, I usually put part of a bottle in my oil and fuel a couple days before changing the oil
