Soo, Just got done with pulling, "adjusting" and putting back on the IP. It idled great, 700 RPM perfect as it was warming up. Took it for a drive (80C engine temp) and noticed that it did more "freewheeling" and less engine braking than before. Thought that was normal. Came up to stop sign and noticed it was now idling at 1100rpm. Okay.. Shifted it into neutral and it started to free rev. Got it back into gear and drove it home. Got home and turned it off in gear. Restarted it and it shot back up in RPM's. Any ideas whats going on??

Thanks.

I did the following:
1CW turn on Rack Limiter
1/8 CW turn on TC
1 turn CW on horizontal throttle stop
1/8 turn CW on Coarse idle

'81 300SD- OM617.951, Turned-up Pump, Pushing 12PSI, 2.5" Turbo-Back Straight Pipe, Euro Head Lights, ALDA Removed, No EGR, Camo Dash + Seat Covers, DU Floor Mats, Cobra CB, LED Trunk lights, 12V outlets in the trunk, and other things...

Yes. You can def feel that it has more kick to it Big Grin

The idle is off though. Sounds like air is getting into the system and its missing, sooo idk about that yet.

The idle is off though. Sounds like air is getting into the system and its missing, sooo idk about that yet.

Fix the air problem first before playing with the idle speed.

If after the air problem is solved the idle speed is still... low I assume? That indicates that the Idle Governor is still too week and needs a another 1/8 to 1/4 turn CW to make it stronger.(Note: If you go too much, it will make the Idle Governor too strong, and the idle will hunt with light throttle input. This is manageable, but with a stick can cause baulking when putting through a parking lot).

Remember that when you increase the Idle Governor Spring Tension, you will have to back off the Vertical Throttle Stop some to allow the Idle Governor to regulate the Idle Speed on its own, and to set the rate of return to idle when warm. What this process is doing is taking the Idle speed control away from the Throttle, and giving it to the Idle Governor where it belongs.

There is no standard number of turns of any screw to achieve the correct balance, so you can see why the factory would put the majority of the Idle control on the Throttle which is accessible and worked for their intentions.

Om616 is the man!

Yeah its definitely got a little miss... Which lift pump is on the IP? The white handled ones supposedly leak air into the system.

I read through your pump theory and used that to tweak the pump. Very nice write up might I say.

The rpm's are right where they need to be oddly enough. I'll work on the air problem and then see if I'll need to readjust that.

Thank you OM616.

Captain- It's the black handled one. Here's the funny thing, it only does it when cold. Once it's up to temp, the idle is smooth and perfect, rpms are great. So I'm not sure yet.

Usually, tight valves or sticky injectors. Either or can happen and cause cold engine miss.Mbz recommends greater valve clearances in colder temps. Good luck.

I have 2 of them right now but just for the first few seconds/<1 minute.
I'll change the injectors later and report back.
It is funny cause just above idle it is smooth.
