Tail fish when going over bumps?
Tail fish when going over bumps?
Hey guys,
On my quest to restore my 240D slowly, ive noticed an annoying problem. Every time i go over bumps and ones that are fairly large, My car does a slight tail fish.
This problem is intermittent and does not happen all the time but does happen more and more often. there is also a nice clunking noise in the rear end when i go over these said bumps
all shocks are brand new and replaced about three to four months ago.
any ideas?
Sway Bars connecters? Are they there and connecting stuff together?
?rear control arm bushings?

(01-02-2012, 02:43 PM)vstef_is Those look great - I'd look at the bushes on the rear arms.

Those are rear sway bar bushings. I just happen to have a rear sway bar beside me (finger is pointing to a bushing). If dry-rotted, by all means replace it. Might not be the whole solution though.
A bit of dry rot never hurt anyone - from the pics, I think they're fine. Plus, the sway bar only allows the rear arms to move up and down together, which is good when cornering, as it will keep a wheel on the ground. However, they're not responsible for allowing any kind of side-movement of the rear axle assy.
That - if any (which is what would cause some tail fish ) should be the fault of the rear arms bushes - which should look very bad.
Look at the rear wheels - rear arms, and the point they're mounted on the chassis. There's bushes galore, and quite big ones.
As long as its there its fine. I don't lose sleep over dry rotted bushings.

Take a Pic of your rear tires. Like the tread part, upload a pic for I can see. (I work at a tire place)

All of what vstef_is and serverman777 are saying is very good.
But wait. Have you tried standing on the side of the car and push/pull on it in the rear? It may be easier to open the trunk so you can grab the edge and shake. The only side to side movement you should get is the wheel moving in the tire.
With my El Camino, (has large rear tire with lots of sidewall) I am always surprised at how far the wheel moves side to side in the tire. But the suspension should not have ANY side to side movement!
I dig that pic of the rear end Captain. I know a 123/126 rear assemble better than most of my family members
I love rear ends too! wink wink haha

(01-05-2012, 08:20 PM)vstef_is I'm still selling the "rear arms bushes" story...
Just follow the rear arms towards the underside of the car, where they connect with the chassis, look for rubber - that's my bet...
(01-05-2012, 07:12 PM)ronnie two differant tyres? That does not help anything. Should not be the problem though.
