Metal Shavings in Timing Case
Metal Shavings in Timing Case
So I'm not sure if this is per se the right forum to ask this question, but I know the guys here are knowledgeable. I've got a 99 E300TD that I pulled the head to fix all the glow plugs, but to get one of the guide rail pins I had to drill it out (long story short the pin broke etc etc). Anyways, now there are some very minimal (but still existent) metal shavings left in the timing case, and I'm asking what's the best way to remove these and how good do I have to be about removing these (I'm young and I just got this car as a gift, this is my first REAL job on this car, but I love working on it). I checked out the WIS and I'd prefer not to have to pull the cover off the timing case (seems like a real pain because it uses so many special tools), but if I have to I will.
Thanks for the advice.

Pictures.. I'm not familiar with the specific engine. We can better give suggestions then.
The tool that has a magnet on the end used to pick up dropped nuts and bolts in screwy places. It is like an antenna, can retract telescopitcally (sic). Not sure what one would call it, but it's like a magnet on a stick. You can grab one at horrible freight for a $1.00 on dollar days. Or, after I had to drill out the stripped threads on an oil drain plug, and a magnet would not work on aluminum, change the oil a few times and see what pops up. I hate the Acura Legend Oil Pan set-up (Gen.II).

Here's some pictures
The red is right where I had to drill something out of the head (which is not on there right now of course)
Yup, Pen magnet, right by the register at almost all auto parts stores
