This will be an ongoing thread with many questions...hopefully there are some answers out there.

This is for a 4 speed manual going into my 300TDT wagon....hopefully just a bolt on operation since the bell-housing is correct for the 3.0T

#1.....What bolts have people used to attach the pressure plate to the flywheel??? I’ve been trying to find pictures and specifics but have had no such luck. Anybody know?

if it don’t blow black...take it back.

1982 300TDT 4 Speed 196K Standard Beige “VEGEWGN”. 300GD FW. Walbro FRC-8 Fuel Pump. ZadaTech LCD Boost, EGT, & Fuel Pressure gauge. Non-EGR Exhaust and Intake Manifold. 3/2 Valves gone. Soon to have Elsbett WVO conversion
1981 300D 314K Midnight Blue “The Blue Car”, Lovecrap system, owned 25 years+

Just make sure they have some strength - I.e. get the 10.8 class not the softer 8.8 class.

Oh great thanks. I noticed most of the drivetrain bolts are 8.8. I.e. the six on the torque converter. Schweet.

#2. How do I make a square peg fit into a rectangular hole? The mechanical speedo on my wagon is a square peg, while the female entrance is a rectangular hole. Any simple solutions?

Switch to the matching speedo cable. There was some switchover date, I think the one you want is the older style.

I scoped about a dozen different w123s, at the PaP yesterday, with no such luck. That was my original plan. I found a w123 with a 4 speed still intact, but it had a later all aluminum manual. Wrong cable yet again.

I will continue to scope, but at the same time I will start formulating a plan of action.

Wow I'm lucky if I find one or two w123's at the local PaP lol, we'll see how they are this trip though

-1982 300D Turbo, 280k miles, ALDA apparently maxxed, fram 8038, 12 lbs boost, non-egr manifolds, W/M injection, 4 brake light mod, Gen II w126 front rotors/calipers, 4-speed swap
In the works: A/W IC, adjust pump, turbo rebuild (w/60 trim comp wheel)
-1980 300SD, 110k, project car. Goal is to get it lookin' like it did on the showroom floor (body and interior wise, not necessarily under the hood )
-1974 240D, FRESH PAINT!!!!!!

It's gonna work anyway - speedo cable wise.

If not here's a 'trick' - take a beer can, drink beer first, cut a small patch, fold it in two, and place the square in the fold. Mount speedo cable with said mod.

Naturally the best route would be to order the correct speedo cable (they're not very expensive)

I doubt you can go backwards as easily, but I made the rectangular peg fit in the square hole by grinding and shaping it down.

maybe you could try jbwelding or straight spot welding some tabs to the side of the square connector, and filing it down. Square folded patch like mentioned above would probably work better

Best option is go find another speedo cable that matches, but it would be interesting to see what rigged solution might work great.

My ground down speedo cable never had a single problem

I’d much rather be in your situation. Taking metal away rather than adding to it. I’ll have to look again at the PaP.
I looked at only the top ends that connect to the odometer/speedometer. Maybe that fitting is always square? Does anyone know?

Anywho i’ll go down and cut off one end of a square one to mock up a modification to it.

Just a note...I called the dealer and a older style cable is $105 new. Bugger.

Does anyone know of a good write up for wiring the reverse lights to the 4-speed shifter?

Easy, 4 wires going to the auto transmission that you pull back inside the car. Wire the violet and white and solid violet to your neutral safety swich on the pedal (or together to bypass not in park safety switch), and the other two wires (forget the color) are the reverse switch lights, wire directly to the swith on your shifter

Thanks for the clarification. I ended up pulling a OEM pigtail off of a 240 that was at the PaP this morning. Plugged right in like the NSS. Then it plugged into the shifter plunge switch.

Bittersweet day today, got everything installed.
Two problems though:

#1--> Managed to break a shifter linkage while trying to lengthen it. Probably will be able to find another one tomorrow.

#2--> The clutch is not engaging. When I push the clutch in, it actuates the slave cylinder, but nothing happens beyond that. With the clutch in, the wheels will start moving if the car is shifted into first. I will post a more in depth question on W123love's TDT

Thanks

See that is the problem. I bleed the system. Fluid would fly out of the slave’s bleeding nipple when the clutch pedal was depressed. With the nipple closed, the the slave cylinder would push its rod. So now the problem is inside the transmission. (I believe)

Just a note: When I was connecting all the clutch lines, the brake fluid would flow very easily. (Just gravity fed) I would make a connection, and then 2 minutes later the fluid would start dripping out the open end. This happened all the way to the slave cylinder. Then it started dripping out of the slave. I bleed it a little bit, but more and more fluid was coming out so I called it good.

if it don’t blow black...take it back.
