The passenger side of my 1982 300sd gave up the ghost a couple days ago and covered the bottom of the car in gear oil, I figured I'd just swap it for the diff in my parts car, but can't figure out how to remove the axle shafts! Is There a secret trick? is seal replacement simple? Looks like time for new rubber boots for the axle shafts when I have a dollar too.

The axle shafts are secured inside the diff via two C-Clips, so you need to open the diff cover, and remove the clips, before removing the axle shafts.

A good DYI for changing the diff on a w123 is here -

http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/W123Differential

(It's the same for w126).
