20-25, 35-40 Jackhammer vibration
Im.going to get it looked at today hopefully. Will post what we find.
Background. Recently had front end work done left wheel was fine. Rught replace ball.joint, tie rod, upper control arm. That mechanic said (after all that done) lower control arm bushings were probably dead too. 4 wheel alignment and 4 new tires
Different mechanic says lower control arm looks fine.
My question. maybe its a common occurence. Maybe your experience can guide me.
What is jackhammer shaking the right side of my car? It only happens around speed listed in post title. Hammering intensity seems variable with speed.
I know tough question to answer when not looking at the car or listening to it but maybe this is common.
Will.post what we find.

wheel balance? maybe a weight popped off?
Walmart dose wheel balancing for 6.50 each tire... Take it there and have it checked out.
I havent eliminated that as an option but i thought that gave more road noise than car hammering.
Could be as simple as something stuck between the hub and the wheel (not bolted on flat). Could be many other things.
First thing I'd try is move the wheel to a different corner and see if the problem follows it.
Are the tread on the tires even from side to side? Or are the tires chopped?

When I got the front end worked on I also had a 4 wheel alignment. Brand new tires less than 500 miles on them. New wheel weights were put on so I assume they were balanced. Back in my high school days working in a tire shop a found it pretty easy to balance a tire and wheel so I assume they did it correctly.
Also I said earlier that the intensity changed with speed. I should be more clear, the speed of the hammering does not really vary which I think one might expect with an out of balance wheel/tire. The intensity increases but not really the speed of it. Also....when doing about the speed that the vibration is occurring....there is not a gradual decrease when the vibration stops. It just stops. The variation in speed could be only 1 mph and the vibration completely goes away.
I would be fine with all this however the vibrations only seem to exist right around the speed limit zones that I most frequent. Meaning I am either driving slow under the speed limit or significantly above the speed limit for the vibration to stop

To go further the mechanic I have, truly one of the coolest guys I have ever met. When hunting out a seasoned old school mercedes mechanic I had one guy tell me 90$ just to look at my car. What a tool. The mechanic I found has been working on these cars since the 60s. When I told him that i had the turbo with manual trans. He says "Well fuck man I am not gonna charge you to look at it. I am really curious about what has been done to this thing" Old European guy.
Anyhow he is a bit of a traditionalist and by default he thinks it is my exhaust system because the thing is a bit goofy in its assembly. I however do not think this is the case and am going to take it to the original mechanic who did the front end work and see if the can point out what the noise is.

LOL wish we could, we have two kids a 1 and a 5 year old. My spouse to be is fine with our 5 year old in the merc but it doesnt have the baby seat brakets for our toddler.
Plus wouldnt want to risk getting arrested for smog and noise pollution on the way there. ;-)
I bought her a 96 volvo 850r over the winter. Thats our family car/turbo charged sleeper.
The funny thing about that car...first it gets barely the amount of attention from me as my mercedes......i think engine displcement is similar, also inline 5 cylinder, and maybe even a very similar kkk turbo. Around 240 hp.

Great weekend, found the noise.......My down pipe is bolted on in a nontraditional manner. the end of downpipe is connected to long exhaust pipe out the rear with a foot and a half section of flex pipe. this allows for a little play in the system. My down pipe had vibrated to a position where is was resting against something. Adjusted that today and the noise is gone.
Funny how I didn't want to believe the mechanic. The noise was just so loud in the car.

I'd say you found yourself a good mechanic....helps when you have stuff you don't feel like doing yourself.
