Hi, Im new here, love the site, tons of info to geek on.
I love Merc's especially Diesels ones, I am a car junkie thru and thru, live and breath.
I have Cars in my blood, both sides of the family, My moms side did NHRA back in the 60's and 70's beside some of the big names like Big Daddy Don Garlits and Bill Ireland, My Dads side of the fam did SCCA, in the late 60's 70's raced new Datsun 510's
Ive been told My late uncle Jim Perry had an award named after him in SCCA
Growing up I just wanted to go fast I got my first 5 hp 4 strk GoKart (funkart) at the age of 9. Me and my Dad would go to Wherehouse parking lots and small tracks off season and play around, then around 11 or so I got a faster one, then I joined IKF and PKA and went to Racing Karts (not cheap fun anymore) still 4 stroke then around 13 or 14 I started racing 2 stoke 100cc, then I got my license and stopped racing karts and moved to cars (just Illegally on the streets at that time "stupid youngster"), my senior project in high school was rebuilding the Engine in my Roadrunner that I had blown up the year before. after a few muscle cars I bought my first turbo car. a 1987 Mistu Starion with factory boxed fender flares. It was slow compared to the muscle cars but so small and It cornered!!!!! After 2 of those I moved to Eagle talon AWD Turbos, "still have a 92" those are fast for super cheap I was running 13.0 1/4's at the track for next to nothing. Me and My best friend Have a 92 Mitsu Gallant VR4 ( well Ill dont have one but he has 2) and we are going to build one to enter in rallye (my life long dream) Jap. turbo cars are fun but in the end they felt cheap for a daily, Where to turn? Mercedes.......duh? right? why wouldnt every one want to own one? my first one " 6 years ago " was a 1 owner silver over blue 87 190E 2.3 (still own it and it still runs great 280k) then a euro 84 230E (still own) then a biege 83 300d N/A. Excellent car, drove like a gasser. and an 83 300sd both 83's I sold for my current driver, a 87 300D Turbo I also own a 82 GMC Jimmy (K5) 6.2L Diesel. great 4x4. Hydro locked it in a water bog one time. just pulled the glow plugs tuned over the starter till all the water pumped out, reinstalled the plugs, let em glow for a min. and she fired right up. zero damage done. I love Diesels!!!!!!!!!!!!

I look forward to learning alot from you guys and maybe also sharing a little knowledge along the way

A couple of people over on BenzWorld asked me if I'd pull it for them. I've pointed them to your FS post here. What kind of headlights did you take from it?

Late model Bosch euros, both had small rock chip holes in the lenses and one of them had some rust in the rear of it, 4 out of 10 condition.
Those sold though.
I hope being a newbe and all ,didnt step on any ones toes. I thought a PnP find was for everyone's benefit.
I saw someone talking about wanting and actually going back for the trans. so I left it. Wasnt, trying to hawg everything.
There was also the Drivers taillight I left in the car, Should have grabbed it.
It was probably a side marker delete Euro one. Ah well.

Tongue The only people whose toes I don't step on are the local indie Benz shop owners. Never know when I might be in dire need of their services. Unless there's something I *know* they'll want, for example a 300D radiator or good coupe rear window, in which case I phone 'em, pull it and sell it to them at cost, I routinely hawg everything.

I didn't actually go down there; too many others announced they'd be converging on it. And someone announced that "there was already a guy taking the bumper," that would be yourself. One guy was trying to induce me to drive all the way down there to get him that driver's side taillight and the dash. If anyone wants to make a little coin maybe by doing that, perhaps even you, PM me, I'll put you in touch with the desirer. For me Portland is a 2-hour drive each way. Won't have time this week.

Wow you guys seem to have a lot of Mercedes in your yards, there's hardly ever any here, and they're mostly gasser v8's. Last trip there I think I saw maybe two Mercedes, not even diesels Sad

-1982 300D Turbo, 280k miles, ALDA apparently maxxed, fram 8038, 12 lbs boost, non-egr manifolds, W/M injection, 4 brake light mod, Gen II w126 front rotors/calipers, 4-speed swap
In the works: A/W IC, adjust pump, turbo rebuild (w/60 trim comp wheel)
-1980 300SD, 110k, project car. Goal is to get it lookin' like it did on the showroom floor (body and interior wise, not necessarily under the hood )
-1974 240D, FRESH PAINT!!!!!!

You'll find some. California seems to be full of them. Maybe east coast too. That's where I imagine rich peeps bought these babies 30 years ago. Out here in corn and soybeanville you're a lot more pressed to come by the 61x/60x

Rusted out beat down 300d turbo 82' -- RIP

We have 4 pick n pull yards around the Portland area. Tons and Tons of regular wrecking yards but not alot of self service yards,
I was able to find a 92 2.5 turbo passngr fender with the intake vents in a PnP about 8 months ago. havent installed yet. waiting to get mine repainted so everything will match.
the currant color isnt the stock one anyway so Im just going to have is shot graphite. It has a black int. so Blk on Blk should look pretty good when its done. i have it sitting on 16x8 92 SL wheels. with Dunlop DZ101 225/55/16 gives it a nice wide presence on the road.

87 300D Turbo. 16x8 wheels off 92 SL
87 190E 2.3.. Complete OEM F&R Euro lighting and Euro F bumper.
84 230e Euro.. Red w/tan cloth, crank windows, pwr sunroof
82 GMC Jimmy 4X4 6.2 Diesel
92 Talon AWD turbo w/ upgrades
73 Roadrunner 340ci

WTB. Euro rear bumper for early (82-88) W201 "190"

There are three Pick'n'Pull's in the Seattle area, but a lot of Benz owners and mercenary resellers like myself are combing them. Recently, these PnP's here jacked their prices to the moon. But there are four very large independent lots in the area --one of them crushes more than 200 cars a day-- and two within the city limits of Seattle which specialize in German --one of these deals almost exclusively in MB (but it's a closed yard and their prices are astronomical) (the other one focusses mostly on Audi, VW, and BMW, but they do get a trickle of Mercedes' and most of what they hold onto is choice). There are a horde of small mom-and-pop yards in the rural area south of Tacoma where I live, and a couple of nice medium-size yards out Meridian Avenue a few miles south of Puyallup. I do enough business with several of these that they cut me deep discounts. Two of them even notify me of every Benz they get in. The large yards won't do that though, it's strictly first-come-first-served. The best two don't publish their inventory online and, for 240D's and 300D's, if I'm not standing there when the hauler brings it in, as often as not they forklift it straight off the truck first onto the puncture-spindles and fuel-catch-tanks (on W123 sedans they simply cut the fuel lines) and then directly into the crusher. Nevertheless, one of them is right on the way to my mom's house, so I stop in maybe three times a week, and I do see about one fresh W123 a week there. Anytime I'm feeling too happy and want to get sad, that's a reliable venue. Yesterday I saw a directly-from-truck-to-crusher W124 coupe, a 300CE, there. It had snazzy imitation-Brabus wheels with Pirelli tires, the spare was new. I grabbed its burlwood walnut console trim, didn't have time to explore further as the forklift driver was impatient to take it to the crusher. Next door to this yard is a metal recycler; before I developed a fair idea of what's rare and what's not, I saw a 15" Bundt thrown into the aluminum recycle bin there, a few months ago. Farther south there are several operations which aren't really strip lots, just a quarter-acre or less with a crusher. Two weeks ago I was standing in the driveway of one of these --it was around back of a landscaping supply store, I didn't even know it was there, I'd just come there to buy some driveway gravel-- when a flatbed turned in and drove around to the back, carrying two W108's. I followed it in, begged them to hold onto them for a day, frantically took what I could, and have been auctioning parts from them over on Benzworld. I did have to pay them $485 for what I took though, and didn't have a clear idea of what's in demand, so won't end up making a huge profit. Unless I can sell the red seats which were in one of them. Driver's seat isn't very good though, upholstery is discolored and heavily worn. Spring frames and shredded wheat sure are nice though. Those W108 (and W110) rear seat hold-down pegs, I could sell all day at $20 apiece. Amber taillights are in big demand too.

Gone but not forgotten: two W123 sedans and two W124 wagons.
W124 1987 300TD wagon, for sale, $1000 (some assembly required).

Thats sad to hear, Dont they know that there is a whole network of people who would be willing to part them out. They could make way more money in the long run for them. Even if they just called up a couple people that they knew could handle it, they could sell the cars for probably more than they are scrapping them for and then once they have been picked clean, have a deal that they would be returned to the yard that sold the car to begin with. Then the yard could scrap whats left and make even more $$$$$$.
It would be an incentive for the yard to cooperate.

I've already discussed that possibility with all of them. Nope, old Benz's are in an unfortunate in-between niche demand-wise.

The large yards simply handle too high a volume to keep any but the choicest cars (of all makes), and the demand for old Benz parts is not enough to compete against those two high-priced yards in Seattle, which are where everyone checks first (and usually finds what they are after) (and the second place people check is the on-line inventory at the Pick'n'Pull's --I seldom bother with PnP anymore, there's just too much competition). The remaining demand for BMW, classic American, and Japanese is far too high for large indy yards to bother with keeping-to-specialty-part old Mercedes' unless it's something like a Ponton or R107 or relatively new one. Those, however, they do already have people to resell them too --*if* the car hasn't gone already to those resellers (or the two Seattle yards) at the insurance auction (most private sellers parting those out list them themselves on CL or eBay).

Smaller yards, they just don't have the will to learn the encyclopedia of MB knowledge it would take to make it worth their while. To them, one old Benz looks pretty much like any other. If it's not real shiny, they seldom keep them more than four or five days before something more profitable arrives which they need the Benz's space for, so into the crusher goes the Benz.

In this state there is another factor at work: here, you can be either a metal dealer or a scrap car dealer, but not both. A metal dealer can buy and recycle catalytic converters, a scrap car dealer can't. In the more rural areas, it is more profitable to deal in cats than in cars. Old Benzes of course do not have cats and so are uninteresting. Most of my choice scores come from these yards. But the driving distances involved are too high for anyone who burns pump fuel to make a profit at it. Even for me, burning grease, it's just a hobby, not a job.

If you want to be truly horrified, pay a visit someday to Binford Scrap Metals, in Kent. They have a 5-acre yard full of cars out back. But they won't sell you one, they would lose their cats-license if the state finds out. They *will* pull an engine or tranny for you...but, everything else is you-pull-it, and...if you want say-for-example a set of W126 front brakes, you're gonna have to lug your tools out there, and lug the tools and calipers and rotors yourself back, a good quarter-mile from the Mercedes row to the office. Over deep mud and coarse loose gravel. No wheelbarrows. Prices are exhorbitant too. They really don't give a f***!

I did start to write here my honest opinion of the two largest yards in the Puget Sound region, but then thought better of it. If I did, and they read it, then next time I walk in I might get something accidentally-on-purpose dropped from a forklift on me...

East of the Cascades, the Columbia River Bend plateau, and eastern Oregon too, is like the Great Plains, --it isn't warranted to generalize *too* much, for there is quite a variety of topography and microclimate over there, but, as a broad rule in Eastern Washington you can expect to see anywhere from 125+ in summer to 50 below in winter. Not much out there between Ellensburg and Spokane but vast vistas of basalt and gently rolling loess hills, landscapes suggestive of infinity and eternity, endless sagebrush and rattlesnakes, except where it's been irrigated with Columbia water from Grand Coulee Dam et cetera --in which places you see fruit orchards, vegetable farms, and amber waves of grain, but you definitely *need* air conditioning in summer, every bit as bad as if you were in Arizona. But here, west of the mountains, temperatures are moderated by the Pacific and it only snows a little in the winter. Mostly rains. The roads get salted only maybe once or twice a year, some years not at all. Moss, not "car cancer," is the car killer here provided the cabin doesn't leak. One advantage over California is, the clearcoat doesn't bake-'n'-blister off here. Some cars even still have original flat un-wavy vinyl surrounds around the windows. Mine doesn't though. I wonder where new ones can be bought? Portland is about the same climate as Seattle but maybe 5 degrees warmer. Portland is better for growing roses and oak trees, Seattle for rhododendrons and fir trees, but the difference is not so much that you can't grow one's flora in the other. Except for those strange myrtle trees in Oregon, you just don't see those up here. Don't see many madronas in Oregon either. But no doubt they exist in some arboretum or other.
