OM617 injection pump gasket replacement
OM617 injection pump gasket replacement
Hi everyone, this is my first posting here.
My OM617 has an oil leak where the injection pump is bolted onto the engine. I was thinking to remove the pump and change the gasket but I somebody told me that the timing needs to be redone. Is that true or it only applies if you actually have to do work on the injection pump itself? I am confident I can remove the pump, replace the gasket and put back the pump but it is true this will this mess up the timing?
Thanks in advance for your replies.
It will mess up the timing think of the injection pump like a distributor if it get turned it changes the timing also if the splined shaft in side of it turns you have to retime it

I would say turn the motor to that 24 btdc and look in the oil filler cap to see that the pointy ends of both the intake and exhaust cams are pointing more upwards than downwards. Then remove the pump. Then you'll hopefully see the IP has timing marks aligned on itself when you take it off. And just keep them lined up. And the marks from the block to IP lined up as well when re-installing.
Trouble could start to arise if you pull the IP off the block when the crank is in just any old position. Then you can get confused where it is turned to.
I am just an amateur but I did pull a pump and mess with this very same debacle about 2 months ago. I mean I pulled the pump like 10 times.
But now I think I could do it no problemo.
Without cussing? LOL
Just remembe rthat the pump has a camshaft in it that may cause it to rotate when you pull it. There are several tutorials on here about the procedure you need to do. Read them thoroughly.

larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?
It's all about lining up the marks-when I pulled my head I let everything go to hell and when I put it back together I simply lined all the factory marks back up, with the #1 piston on the compression stroke (cam lobes up)
