Only true on some (earlier?) W123 cars. On the rest, the flasher relay is forward of and to the left of the shifter under the trim panel.

Mine is an '82 and the hazard switch has the blinker relay in it, as does my dad's '83.

-1982 300D Turbo, 280k miles, ALDA apparently maxxed, fram 8038, 12 lbs boost, non-egr manifolds, W/M injection, 4 brake light mod, Gen II w126 front rotors/calipers, 4-speed swap
In the works: A/W IC, adjust pump, turbo rebuild (w/60 trim comp wheel)
-1980 300SD, 110k, project car. Goal is to get it lookin' like it did on the showroom floor (body and interior wise, not necessarily under the hood )
-1974 240D, FRESH PAINT!!!!!!

Just to clarify in the switch relay vs. separate box debate.

Pre-81 should have the press-style switch+relay combo. 82+ should have a rocker switch with a separate relay box (which is the flasher relay) just ahead and slightly left of the gear selector.
