Should I just have the car towed to the shop, because I dont know how much fluid to add and I dont want to run it with the level so low. Any andvice would be great. Thanks.

05-26-2012, 06:29 PM #1After getting back from a month long vacation, I go to fire up my 87 300TD and there is a big pool of ATF on the floor, oh no! Theres probably about three quarts and I cant see where its coming from but I suspect its the pan gasket. I havent run it and the dipstick shows its more than full.
Should I just have the car towed to the shop, because I dont know how much fluid to add and I dont want to run it with the level so low. Any andvice would be great. Thanks.

Already did. Cant see anything wrong with the gasket, but I dont think the leak is coming from the front or rear seals just because I cant see any evidence of fluid from that area. The leak has stopped dripping though.

05-27-2012, 11:23 AM #4My dads 83 300d pan gasket leaks also when it sits for a few months. If you top it off and drive it it wont leak for a month or two. it looks like it coming from the pan gasket on his car we just start it up and put in neutral and top off like normal

-1982 300D Turbo, 280k miles, ALDA apparently maxxed, fram 8038, 12 lbs boost, non-egr manifolds, W/M injection, 4 brake light mod, Gen II w126 front rotors/calipers, 4-speed swap
In the works: A/W IC, adjust pump, turbo rebuild (w/60 trim comp wheel)
-1980 300SD, 110k, project car. Goal is to get it lookin' like it did on the showroom floor (body and interior wise, not necessarily under the hood )
-1974 240D, FRESH PAINT!!!!!!

05-29-2012, 11:40 PM #6I would just drain it and change the filter/gasket and put in new fluid, that way you know it has the right amount, and a new filter and gasket to boot!

I dont think its coming from the pan anymore, its hard to see where its coming from.
What kind of ATF should I use, Mercedes says only use MB brand, Ive heard some people say they use Mobil 1. Anything else? How important is it?

05-30-2012, 09:06 AM #8Start it up so the fluid refill's the transmission and then it will show that its low. It wont hurt it if its low as long as you don't drive it that way
