Pulling apart my donor parts car and there is something bizarre in the exhaust part of the turbo. The car is an '85 300SD California version. Pretty certain is has to do with emissions control but it looks like it could really affect turbo performance.
Any one know anything about these?

It's a chunk of trap ox. It's not meant to be there. There's the reason MB gives you a free turbo during a trap ox recall.

If you still have the trap ox you can score a free turbo at the dealer. I know someone who literally towed his car in for it...

Lol awesome. That's the internals from the trap oxidizer as ^he said. It's basically a catalyst for a diesel. Mercedes had to put it preturbo to keep the temps up in order to keep the thing working. Unfortunately it causes the issue you have.

80 300sd hy35, front mount intercooler, w115 intake, rack limiter removed, Alda removed, full load turned up, boost, ebp, trans, pyro, egr delete, 3.5" exhaust, e-fan, 16x8 rims with, 245/50 tires, lowered, bilstien 5100's, 12" front brakes, 2.65:1 diff.
