So I had this idea to use this Getrag S5D 250g 5 speed from a BMW and adapt it to use in the Mercedes.
This is a close ratio non-overdrive 5 speed and is known in the BMW world to handle a lot of torque and power. I think the Gear ratios are perfect for use on the 617 or even a 603. 4.23 First, 2.52 Second, 1.66 Third, 1.22, Fourth, 1.00 Fifth and 4.04 Reverse. I also like these BMW transmissions as shifting them are smooth as opposed to the clunkynees of the rod types of the Mercedes trans.

I would do a dropnosky(JB3) to the bellhousing and the standard Mercedes 10 spline clutch will work on the input shaft. The standard BMW shifter and shifter linkage would have to be modified to make it work.
I also thought of adding a divorced Laycock overdrive unit from a Volvo which may (and I haven't verified this) be able to allow you to use the stock auto driveshaft.

I have since acquired a true Mercedes Getrag 5 speed. Even though the gear ratios are not as favorable, I'm going to go with that route and will not need this BMW transmission taking up storage.

This came out of a 1995 BMW E36 318i with M42 engine. Mileage unknown. But spins nicely.

I'm selling it for $100.00 firm plus shipping for forum members. Trans will include the BMW shifter and shifter linkage.

Hmm, too bad I already bought a transmission from you lol, otherwise I might be interested

-1982 300D Turbo, 280k miles, ALDA apparently maxxed, fram 8038, 12 lbs boost, non-egr manifolds, W/M injection, 4 brake light mod, Gen II w126 front rotors/calipers, 4-speed swap
In the works: A/W IC, adjust pump, turbo rebuild (w/60 trim comp wheel)
-1980 300SD, 110k, project car. Goal is to get it lookin' like it did on the showroom floor (body and interior wise, not necessarily under the hood )
-1974 240D, FRESH PAINT!!!!!!

It will fit with a bellhousing graft and shifter modifications.

I do think this BMW Getrag S5D 250g 5 speed close gear ratio trans is ideal for the 240D/300D. - 4.23, 2.52, 1.66, 1.22, and 1.00.

With that said, this gear box has been SOLD.

It will need lots of modifications like welding on a new bell housing. A custom shifter and drive shaft and trans mount. You would have to figure out the flywheels and clutch also

1987 300SDL 6spd manual om606.962 swap project
1985 300td euro 5spd wagon running

Once you get the bellhousing situated, you can use the standard 240D manual flywheel and clutch. The tran's input shaft splines fits the 240D clutch perfectly.
