Found a euro 230 gasser - with I believe a 4spd - and wondering if I could use this trans with my 300d project. W123 chassis so I assume I can use the pedals driveshaft etc, but would have to track down the proper bellhousing?

Thanks

No you can't use the transmission starter is in the wrong side you need to find a transmission from a W123 diesel every thing else you can use

Thanks for the quick reply. Guess I keep looking for the trans for a swap.

Depends - is it a 230 or a 230E?

You are right if it is an older 230 you can use your transmission if it is a 230E you can't

It's a 1977 230 so will check starter location when I drag it home. Thanks

'77 is the old M115 engine with same starter orientation as OM61X Smile Should fit. Depending on age of the OM617, you might still have to change the gearbox flange plate, they changed the centering from screws to dowls, but I'm not sure when. You'll see.

You can vaguely see the difference here; early OM617 & late gearbox:

What was the first year for the 230E? I'm looking for the drive shaft

The M102 engine/230E was introduced in 9/'80. As was the new 109HP 200. Both M102 engined cars (230E & 200) share the same drive train.
