OM617.952 relocated to 1994 Jeep Wrangler
Hey All ,
I am new to Mercedes engines, but now have 2 ( 2007 Jeep Grand with 3.0L V6 Turbo Diesel ) and I have purchased a 1984 300D with OM617.952 to install into my 1994 Jeep Wrangler (original 4.0L inline 6 )
I am following in the footsteps of others and this engine can be installed and reuse the AX-15 and NP231 !! IF an adapter from ax-15 bellhousing to OM617 is made !! This seems to be the hardest part so I am offering to make more than one of these adapter plates.
I can offer a Bellhousing , adapter plate , and cover plate ( to cover all gaps ) . These will be done with aluminum ( adapter plate ) and steel ( cover plate ) . I need to know year , make , model , of vehicle and model of engine and transmission .
JEEP IS ONLY applications BEING OFFERED $650 ; BUT , for the Jeep/AX-15 or Jeep/NV3550 ; I will also offer the pilot bearing and flywheel ( resurfaced flywheel is $725 ) and ( NEW flywheel is $775 )!!
.... so PM me if you are interested

NO SIR !!
That is for the full conversion KIT !! BellHousing, Adapter Plate, Cover Plate, Flywheel, and Pilot Bushing !! This is where the option of NEW or USED ( resurfaced ) flywheel comes in !!
Only thing left is motor mounts and wiring glow plugs and gauge sensors !! Most of stock JEEP sending units plug directly into MBZ engine ( coincidently ) making it an easy swap !!
Everyone is working on Tachometer fix ( kinda got everyone stumped ) !!
Winmutt , I have seen your posts , you seem VERY knowledgeable, any IDEAS on getting the Tach to work ???

Does the jeep have a tach?
So the price of the whole conversion for the trans is $700 range? This is 5 speed manual? How much/how common? What kind of output do they have and how long are they?

how about a Cherokee? I have an 01 w/ NV3550. I wa trying to loocate the VM motori IDI to no avail.

I think he's asking how much these trans' are and how common they are...
the AX-15 is a fairly common trans in Jeeps from the early 90's on...havent priced one lately, but it should be around 100 FRNs at a pick-n-pull

I searched high and low for an 01 (last year old cherokee) with the 5spd, almost all of them are auto. The 01 happens to have the NV3550 which is an excellent trans. The AX15 is OK and is more common (in earlier Cherokee's/wranglers) but the NV is the one to have. I forget the cherokee 4.0 output specs, but HP/Torque more than a 617.
The 4.0 is large, seemingly similar dimensions as 617. Would it need to be lifted for pan clearance?
The gear ratio's seem fine, it'll turn at about 2200RPM at 65.
Any pics?
I can't really think about another swap at the moment (some finished, some just started), but I'm curious.
YES SIR !! You are the perfect candidate !! I can set you up with necessary components to install OM617 into your Cherokee !! You do the motor mounts and little wiring to control " pump on " and " glow plugs " and you are in business !!
This works with 2 and 4 wheel drive JEEP vehicles that came with 4.0 or 2.5 !! Wrangler and Cherokee "87 to "06 and 1993 Grand Cherokee with 4.0 and AX-15 manual trans !!

OOPS !!
Yes !! These trans are Dime a Dozen ( figuratively ) ! You will have to find them in XJ Cherokees more commonly ( at least in my area Pull A Part ) Not a single Wrangler in over 2000 cars !!??

I have a 1 " body lift ; can't tell ya if it is critical to have it !!
I decided to use JP Magazines " Salvage Yard Diff Swaps " found a Dana 44 out of a 1975 J10 pickup that will bolt right into my YJ needs a rebuild and locker and regear to 4.10s ( JP Mag said the narrow track with a driver side drop did not start until 1980 thru 1991 ) MINE is Definately a 1975 !!! AND I pulled a Dana 44 REAR out of a Isuzu Rodeo and it has 4.10s; so just needs a DETROIT TRUTRAC !! It will bolt right up with no Modification also ; SO I am in business !!
The OM 617 is almost exact same weight and length and height as the JEEP 4.0L !! It has a little less power and torque than the 4.0L ; but the OM 617 will pull down 25 to 30 MPG the the 4.0L could never dream of !!! LOL !!!

Well, you succesfully put another idea in my head, but this engine swap would be thrid on the list. This Jeep is now my wifes winter car, and I gotta say, I really like the 4.0, especially how it starts when it's -20!

STILL SUFFERING IN PAIN AND AM 70% PARALYZED IN LEFT LEG FROM KNEE DOWN ( SO I WALK LIKE FRANKENSTIEN !!! lol )
I HAVE A FEW PICS BUT AS YOU CAN IMAGINE PROGRESS IS SLOW !!
Bell housing mock up !!
Bell housing bolted up to Jeep ax-15 trans ( this bell moved the starter to the opposite side of the Turbo's Heat )
with that adapter could you swap a 2wd jeep 5spd in to an old benz??? sounds interesting
How would you swap the starter to the other side??? wouldn't that interfere with the oil filter housing??

Interesting I'll have to look at my car and see if the clearance is there for the starter
I think the steering box may be in the way there...or maybe Im just tired and cracked out from my ethics final...
Those 4.0l motors were great. I had a 90 Cherokee Sport 4x4 with the H.O. and a five speed, and that thing would roast the rear tires at will. Felt like you had a V8 until you got to the higher(ish) rpms.
I believe my old '90 had a Borg Warner T5, though. The AX15 bellhousing was of use for one of my old project ideas, 2.5l having the same pattern as a Chevy 350. (Early, GM sourced 2.5, not sure about later 2.5s). Idea was to take that bell and bolt it to the trans in question, but I found an adapter bellhousing kit with clutch for cheap enough. I believe that trans was...(next paragraph)
For a five speed to swap into a 123, I personally like the Toyota W58 (RWD Celica, NA Supra), easy shifting and plenty of capacity (can handle 350lb-ft, ~425 for the R version in the Turbo MKIII Supra), and the bellhousing patterns match up nicely, putting the starter in the right place and requiring a minimal adapter to the stock Toyota bell to work. These transmissions shift quickly and have nice stock shifters, don't know how 'truck' the AX and NV transmissions are going to shift like. I also don't know of the torque capacity of these boxes, although the NV showed up in full size Chevy trucks backing up V8s so I doubt it's a wimp.
It'll be interesting to see what a variable turbo and whatnot would have these OM motors dyno as, I'm thinking 300lb ft at the far end of tuning. That's enough to break a world class T5 in drag racing use. For most of us, that probably won't be much of a concern, but if someone were to shoot for the moon with the 617 and swap in a five speed, I'd have all the extra margin I could get. I'd also maybe find one of these Jeeps with the five speed at a car lot and take it for a test drive to see if I liked the way it shifted. If you're going to swap out the 4.0 for an OM in your Jeep, though, may as well make it as uncomplicated as possible.

Sorry it has been so long in updating ..... to start off my machinist flipped over my piece of work I spent hours making sure everything was in the right place and centered ; but he flipped it over and that offset EVERYTHING !! So i had a choice to make either scrap and start over or try to make it work !! So as LUCk would be on my side it fit up to the AX-15 Bellhousing " almost " perfectly !!
I am working on adding more pictures everyday to the flickr account I set up for this build ....... so here is the link ......... enjoy !!!

I am putting the om617 mated to a t-5 trans in my cj. I saw a picture of your adapter plate on your flickr page. Very nice! Questions: How thick is the adapter plate? Also, how thick is the flywheel bushing? Thanks foryour help.

The adapter plate between the engine and trans ( is 5/16 inch ) for the ax-15 ; but may be different for other transmissions !! This is the depth needed to allow the ax-15 clutch engagement to work properly !!
I integrated the pilot bushing into the flywheel conversion adapter plate so a stock off the shelf parts store piece could be used !! I am not sure of the exact dimensions, the machinist does this !! ( he basically took the merc flywheel measured it and made the conversion adapter from that) !!
Wow, I mean WOW. What's funny is I wish the Benz ran like my Cherokee and vise versa. I want one of these kits. It might be a few months but Im down like four flat tires. I was looking to put a 4BT from a frito lay truck. But they are completely aluminum bodies, so richer people than me made a company that buys FL's trucks. And I kinda Luke the idea of an MB engine in my jeep. Put a star on the grilled, maybe a hood ornament in that groove in the center of the hood.
I wanted to let everyone know !!
I have decided to remove the OM617 and replace it with a Computer Controlled Cummins High Pressure Common Rail wastegated Turbocharger in a 275 cu. in. configuration known as a QSB 4.5L !!
I wanted a cummins when I installed the OM617 , but I could not afford the Cummins !! Well , things have changed and I am following my original plan !!!
