OM617-vs-2 stroke diesel
OM617-vs-2 stroke diesel
I have a '71 Jeep DJ5 (postal) that I'd like to repower with a diesel engine.
Engine choices:
'81 OM617 (195k)
Circa '57 all aluminum, valveless 4.1L V4 two-stroke (1 of 2 known to exist)
I can go "safe" with the I5 or go "all out" with the V4
Turbo choices: (2) GT2256 VGT or HE351VE with stock intercooler
Can a valveless 2-stroke be turbocharged?! Does boost go to blower or bypass? Parallel 2256's or single 351?
Thanks for your input!!
I would check the rev range of the 2 stroke as they are typically found in plant, marine, rail/diesel electric where the range is very narrow. This isn't much use on a road going vehicle for obvious reasons. Turbo charging is a requirement on a 2 stroke diesel in fact all the ones I can think of are compound with a supercharger as well. Forced induction is needed to scavenge the exhaust gasses. If your sure it doesn't have exhaust valves I would definitely give it a miss as it wont have any rev range and will be an utter pig to get started.
It will be a great engine but not for a car.
Detroit's use exhaust valves. Turbo charging is not required, but a blower is, at least on a detroit. A turbo is often used in addition to the blower. And they do make great truck engines.
Must say that if only two exist of whatever you have I would not use it. Keep it as an antique engine and then use the 617.
larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?
Two strokes are for chainsaws :p
I've seen the V4 in person, it looks like it could be a beast with work. Kinda wide though....

Wow! I wish my 300td FS post was getting this much attention! When you're done reading this, buy some parts from me.
the 2-stroke is a Harnischfeger V463 (4cy-63cid ea.) and of course it has a blower. I was wondering if pushing boost from a turbo, straight into the blower would work (not f up the blower). I don't know enough about compound systems.
I was lucky enough to get the operation manual, parts manual, etc with the engine otherwise I'd have scrap aluminum. In the manuals it shows 2 configurations: automotive and marine. Mine is marine but the only difference is the accessories. Both turn ccw.
This pic is of the "other one". I'll take a pic of line tomorrow.

its apparently an sae3 bolt pattern, but how do I find out what bellhousings are sae3?.

Turbo or not turbo? That is the question.
After fingering through the manuals (again) the only references to rpms was found in the table of limits, which gives 600 and 2800 as the parameters. So if idle is 600 then 2800 must be optimal operating rpm. Not red line, right?
Is there a tranny that anyone can think of that'd work with that?
The only hp rating was on a print ad that I got from ebay. It said 160 hp.
Any idea what kind of torque that would equate to?
PS does anyone know how to make pic sizes smaller on a 1st gen droid? I have pics, they're just too big.
Well most industrial diesels, such as those in tractor trailers and the like, redline around 3000RPM so 2800 could quite possibly be the red line. I haven't ever seen a bolt patter quite like that before, but I don't have a lot of experience with industrial diesels. Anything can be made to fit with an adapter plate. The only problem I can see with it is that starter. It looks like it could be in the way.

Well shit that makes it easy
