1) Angry because it is only running on 5 cylinders
2) Angry because it is very free flowing Big Grin

After the entire intake was removed, I looked down into the intake ports this evening - couldn't see anything obviously wrong with either of the ports on #2. So it's still anyone's guess as to what is up with that engine at this point. Granted, with all that yummy slime/crud in the intake from EGR+CCV vapors...it's hard to see in there.

Few more hours to go and the old OM606.910 will be removed from the W124...then the OM606.962 will be put in its place.

Matt

Until I know for sure what is wrong with it - your guess is as good as mine. Smile

If you rev it up just a little bit, it will backfire slightly through the intake and it is also pumping exhaust through the intake. Methinks the valves and/or seats for the #2 cylinder have been damaged. The intake runners for #2 got warm after only a short time of idling - so the exhaust flowing the wrong way is heating things up a bit.

The previous owner had the glow plugs swapped out and I think they said that the engine started acting up AFTER the shop changed the glow plugs....so perhaps a chunk of miscellaneous crud or a chunk of old glow plug did some damage in there...

Matt

You can try to change the hydraulic valve lifters. they Jam some times and valves lets the pressure out

That is VERY good advice - thank you!
I should have checked the lifters before I started disassembly of the W124...I could have been driving it months ago. Oh well.

Yeah, stuck lifters. You can pull them out and exercise them in a vise, squirt cleaner into the ports and get them working properly again.

1998 MB E300 - 194,000 miles. Current/future mods: 7.5mm pump elements, Holset HX40 Turbo feeding Eaton M90 supercharger through custom fabbed intake system. Aeroturbine muffler, scratch-built 4" stainless exhaust. EGR eliminated, ECM recalibrated, modified rack position feedback circuit. Porterfield RS brake pads, Bilstein sport shocks, VDO EGT, oil and boost gauges.

2000 Ford F250 - 150,000 miles. Current/future mods: DP Tuner 3 map chip, scratch-built high flow intake, high output IDM, open circuit fuel system, ball bearing turbo, South Bend full metal clutch, slotted and drilled rotors. Autometer Sport Comp EGT and boost gauges.

Methinks the OM606 in this rat rod suffered from a stuck lifter or two during this burnout run...do you concur?

Nope, he was running without wastegate and due to ridicoulus boost he blew a 10cm piece off the headgasket at the 6th cylinder...

btw it's a OM603 Wink

Many om606 engines have problems with valves. Usually valve sinks in head and lifter runs out of adjustment (is that right word for it?) and valve wont hold pressure anymore. If that happens faulty cylinder usually begins to run when you press gas pedal. On idle it doesnt run. Let the engine go cold and pour some oil on that valve and look does oil surface decrease.

Very good information there - thank you!

I recently gave this engine to a diesel mechanic student in Indiana - he is going to rebuild the entire engine and has plans to turn it into a STD.
