Where is the engine serial number on an OM606?
It arrived at a local yard about two hours ago, five minutes before closing. A W210 turbo diesel and that's all I can tell. No trunk emblems, and the B pillar tag has been chewed enough to render it illegible, I presume by jaws of life. Can someone tell me where I hunt for the engine serial number. Thanks.
Verify that it's a wolf, not a sheep in wolf's clothing.
That should be obvious by the stock turbo on it. I can't imagine someone bolting a stock turbo to an NA engine, plus the turbo om60x blocks have a dedicated turbo oil supply port on the passenger side instead of the 617-style reacharound that's replicated for NA-turbo conversions.
Also, there should be several places with the vin on it, on the firewall, trunk etc.
My skepticism level has been raised in the course of going over my deer-wrecked '85 300D. I discovered, while it was at the body shop getting estimated, about a week ago, that the firewall VIN starts with WDB 123 and the tags say WDB AB, in other words all this time I've had a German chassis into which someone installed a US interior, bumpers, engine. Also, it is not completely certain that my engine is a 952 OM617. The 5 and the 2 are polished down so much it's illegible.
And I've seen perhaps a dozen gray-market Euro-spec imports in W126 body style in the past year. There's one in the yard alongside this W210, in fact, a 1990 300SE without the usual pollution controls (anybody need a set of Euro W126 headlamps with wipers?)
So, where is the engine number stamped?
Its on a flat horizontal casting above and at the front of the IP under the fuel filter area. It isn't easy to see and you will need to look from the back of the engine looking forward. You will probably also need to sand it a bit to make the stamping legible.
