Building a 606 STD. Going for about 350hp.. But i want a clutch that holds up to about 800nm. I have the orginal 601 flywheel. What are the strongest clutch that bolts on to this flywheel? Does the flywheel need any mods?

Im looking for a better clutch as well. 601 should be the 8.0" flywheel which is pretty small. The 602 had the 8.5". The 16v had a 9", this is what I am shooting for. SPEC clutch has a variety of solutions but are not cheap and I have heard shotty things about them.

Jeemu has some posts in the archives that mention his clutch. It's a custom setup that uses, IIRC, an E39 M5 clutch. The reason I like this idea is that the clutch is pretty strong in stock form. You can beef up a 9" clutch, but the more aggressive the compound you use on the disc, the harder the clutch tends to be to live with.

I also wonder how much trouble it would be to fit a B5 RS4 Audi clutch to a Merc crank. I had one that took several dozen very nasty AWD launches with a stock pressure plate. Engagement was smooth with a light pedal.

I've seen some very nice cars ruined for daily driver use simply because of clutch engagement.

Using the M5 clutch also allows for it's 240mm disk and pressure plate. It is not the lightest thing as far as inertia,
but you will loose mass from the required machined flat flywheel.

So this setup uses a machined Mercedes flywheel rather than another flywheel custom drilled for a Mercedes crank?

Yes, a machined flat Mercedes flywheel, although, Jeemu has a custom chromoly flywheel made for him I think.

Thanks for the info. I've been on the fence about modding my '603 primarily because the clutch is such an unknown. I want organic disc drive-ability without a heavy pedal more than I want horsepower. If I can have big torque and a sissy clutch, well then that's a big plus Smile

Another option is to use a multi-plate clutch that comes with it's own flywheel machined for
a Mercedes. It has far less inertia, which is fine for our diesel engines, and allows you to shift
faster, both of which are easier on the transmission as well.

The price is not bad either (depends on how many disks you want), and it should
be a bolt on affair. I really just need to get the height of the stock manual transmission clutch
setup for the company to make it, before I buy one.

A multi-plate clutch will do exactly what you want. The engagement is not bad at all, and depending on
how much pressure you order it with, can be just as stiff a stock clutch. A twin plate can transmit something
like 700lbs/ft as well Smile

So you can machine the 601 flywheel to fit a e34 pressure plate and disc?

Yes, this is what i have done! Very easy if you have a latheWink Holds massive torq and power, and you will get a beefy left legWink

Is the pedal effort high with a stock BMW pressure plate, or is yours just stiffer than normal?

EDH_Performance: But you use the 530D gearbox as well? The E34 M5 clutch disk will not fit the Merc`s inputshaft, or?

You can get disks made with the merc inputshaft. Or just use a merc disk, 300e/c250td are the same diameter.
