Idle noise???
Idle noise???
Hi all, I promise that I did a search. I really did. Unfortunately, I did not find what I was looking for. Ok, as my username would suggest, I am the recent purchaser of a '92 300SD (yes, a rod bender). This is my first newer mercedes diesel and I have a couple of questions.... At idle it really sounds like a piston is about to come flying out of the head. It sounds like someone is hitting the top of my valve cover with a hammer. Accelerate, and its smooth and quiet as can be. I went on youtube and watched some MB Diesel idling videos and they pretty much sounded the same I guess but it just seems alarming to me. It also smokes, just a little. Not enough that I can see a cloud behind me when Im driving or anything but enough that when I have it in my garage running the motor for more than a minute or two, I have a haze in my garage and it starts getting hard to breathe. Now trust me, I know its a diesel and what Im describing is characteristic of diesels. I have owned SEVERAL other diesels over a period of years but none of them really sound like this one at idle and Im really nervous about my car bending a rod or falling apart or something. I was kind of wondering if I might have an injector or a glowplug problem or something but I havent had time to dig that far into it yet. Any info is greatly appreciated!!!
Might just be a stuck hydraulic valve lifter. If you switch to synthetic that will clean it out.

Quote:Also @ 137k, on the ticker switching isnt going to cause a bunch (more) leaks? No, thats an old myth. Synthetic will actually REDUCE leaks.
It can. Revving the engine pumps up the oil pressure.

I thought it was the 350sd that was the rod bender???
Its 1991+ W126 and all W140 models with the OM603.97x. 300SDL, 300SD, 350SD.
sounds like a lifter if it quiets up after it warms up at least that what it did in our old subie
try some BG 109 if you change your oil put 109 in run it for 200 miles! let the engine go through as many heat cycles as you can IE (hot cold) short trips in town and then do another oil change with filter in 200 miles!!! and it makes a big difference it cleans lifters and decarbons stuck rings
I used it on an old Toyota fj40 and picked up 30 psi compression on one cylinder and 10-15 on all of the others!!!

After driving it on a longer trip today (total of around 75 miles today) I noticed that the car pretty much smokes all the time, not like billowing but enough that at night I could see it in my rear view in the other cars' headlights and the "rattling" all but goes away when I have the A/C on. NOW Im confused... Man, I hope I dont have a bent rod!!! I would imagine that the car would run like crap though. At a stop, the car kind of rythmically shakes back and forth but I contributed that to the flat engine mounts that I plan on changing out next week. HELP!!!
