Got my 83 240d in 04, thinking that I would start making biodiesel. I chose the 240 because it was a 4spd and faster off the line then any of the 300d's that i test drove. Been my daily driver ever since. Love it.

   

Lately Ive been looking for a om617 turbo to drop into it. On Saturday, I thought that I had found one. There was an ad on CL for a 120k mile, 84 300d that the owner's son sideswiped a park bench with. He wanted 700 for it, so I tentatively offered 500, and went to go check it out. Turned out to be waaaaay nicer than I expected.

Despite the bad body stuff, everything works, the interior is clean, no cracks in the dash, almost no blowby from the engine. It is so much smoother and quieter than the 240! sweet!

So now i have this problem. I still want the 617 with the 4 speed, but i cant decide whether to put the 4spd into the 300, or the 617 into the 240. The former option seems like it would be a bit easier, (opinions please?) but then I would have to get those dents worked out, and some paint, but the car would probably end up pretty nice, and I think that I would feel obligated to keep it nice. On the other hand putting the 617 into the 240 is attractive because it has fewer little details (no AC, manual climate contol, manual windows) to pay attention to, leaving me more time for the important things like 10mm elements and compound turbos Wink

What to do?

I voted 4-speed in the 300 and a 4BTA in the 240. A 6BT would be FAR too heavy and long. The 4BT can still be pushed up to 500-800hp with the same mods and the weight increase isn't nearly as big.

Those dents look very fixable. Push them out, get some paint from MB and find a good body shop (not crap like Maaco) to finish it up.

Good lookin' cars, keep them up!

Thx for the info. I'm looking at a 72 220d & dunno much about those engines though I'd assume are similar. Noticed the 220 though is considered a OM615.

is there any sort of preventative maintenance that can prevent it? One thing that makes me uncomfortable about my 240 is the amount of time that it takes for the oil pressure to come up after a morning start.

I voted 4spd in the 300 and shoehorning a cummins. However, I agree a 4bt is much more achievable, as long as you do a 5 or 6 speed and not the caravan tranny.

'78 300D, OM617.912: 4spd manual, TB03 at 10PSI, 26*BTDC, DV's turned, HVAC, emissions system removed, e-fan, short ram, 3" downpipe to straight exhaust, W126 Bendix brakes, MR2 Spyder seats. 2890lbs
