Hi Guys & Girls
FNG here in the Atlanta here and I'm happy I found this site. Great information and links to other great sites. I was 32 hours away from buying a TDI Jetta and stumbled upon STD. I now want a MB Diesel instead to replace my reliable but vanillia Camry. Im looking for a performance (300-400hp) and mileage but understand these two are typically opposing factors. I have a line on the following auto cars: 85 300D, 85 300CD, 87 190D, and 87 300D. My question is which one of the cars has the best horsepower potential along with the being relatively easy to upgrade (parts and actual wrenching)? Is one car more difficult to convert to manual than another? I am on a reasonable budget but and I have access to sufficient tools to do almost anything. Any help/guidance is greatly appreciate. TIA

You won't get 300HP from a 617 without spending big money...Best you can do without sending out the the pump is maybe 150hp/200tq ish don't quote me on that. So the two 85's are out of the question.
Personally? The 85 300CD, with a manual transmission($1,000), elements($1,500), bigger turbo($500), and gauges/intercooler/manifolds/etc. ($500). That's ~$3,500 in mods to get you that 300-400hp.
Assume the two 85's have been neglected-so you will need a timing chain (100) guide rails(75) chain tensioner(spring(20) injector service (150ish), valve adjustment (elbow grease+ gasket) to get it back to stock before messing with anything.
The 617 is very easy to work on, but does require regular valve adjustments.
The 603 might be a better choice, I'll let others chime in.

87 300D has the most potential for power and performance, although having never worked on those series engines I couldn't tell you how difficult they are to work on

forgot about that. Definitely 60X it will save you mucho effort. Although I really like the looks of the w123 front end....because sealed beams are +50hp at least :p

The budget to reach 400hp should be no less than $10,000. If you do the work yourself.
Motor--603 is not strong enough for 400hp:$2,500
Pump:$1,500
Tranny, flywheel, clutch, linkage:$2,500
Turbo, Intercooler and Manifold: $2,500
Suspension, wheels and brakes: $4,000
On and on.
Buy the car you like then mod it to your hp goals.
go with the '87. Swapping a 606 will be easier
OM606 - $2200
Pump - $1500
Tranny (722.6 with stand alone controller) $800
Turbo set up - $2000
Suspension - $2500
still looking over 10k (and thats if you can score a 722.6 for a nice low price)
I would have went with a TDI, more plug and play power add ons.

new here and im actually in a similar situation.
i actually just picked up a 1999 e300d with 149k and a 87 e300 with 200k (#14 head :-( ) but both are in GREAT running condition.
i actually only need the motors and trans from ONE of them to transplant into my 1987 G-wagon.
my questions are which one would be better?
im looking for 300-350 HP with much better MPG (i get 12-15 MPG now on a good day) with GREAT reliability.
i would also like it to run smooth with as little noise as possible with a diesel .
also what am i looking at cost wise and best place to source the parts i will need.

You want the 606 for reliability considering the head on the 603. You'll need the injector pump from the 603 to get 300hp out of the 606.
You say you're going to use the trans from one of these. Is it possible to bolt the X-fer case to either of them?
use a 60x engine ,in the uk we have the 606 turbo/605 turbo/and 602 /662 turbo engines along with 6 speed manual merc boxes.
get a merc 190 and put one in and enjoy / the 2.6 petrol 190e has the crossmember and mounts to work with the 606a engine.
i have a 1989 280 g wagen i have fitted with a 606a and 6 speed manual and it is amazing ,the 60x engines are fantastic and combining a classic merc car with a more modern td is the way . the standard torque of the 606a is pretty impressive and my g wagen can do 30 mpg if you really go steady ,not much fun but it proves the point.
