I replaced the timing chain this weekend and the IP timing has changed. It sounds like it advanced the timing since it's louder when cold. But it got me wondering on how the timing chain stretch affects the IP timing. Does an older chain cause the timing to advance or retard?

just think of the span of time it takes to turn anything is longer causing the 'timing' to be behind 'retarded' the crank, cam and injection pump gear diameters don't change...

Well aren't there those wood-drift keys that advance the timing to take up for chain slack? Was one of these used? That's the only thing I can think of off the top of my head or maybe you advanced a tooth when you put it back together?

After the timing chain replacement the timing was too advanced as suspected. Adjusted the timing a few degrees back and it is running great.
