I recently bought a 1981 Mercedes 508d campervan project. It has a very rare om314 engine and a 4 speed manual transmission, 171 000 kms...runs like a dream, except it's reaaaaal slow.

Form the research I did on the engine I found the following:

3.8L 4cyl naturally aspirated, 80-85hp,@1800 RPM.
Direct injection, side valves, long stroke.
Considered to be indestructible: usually 1/2 million miles between rebuilds
Way more overbuilt than om6XX car engines

Question:

What can I do to squeeze more juice out of it?. I know 100+ hp factory turbo versions existed but were very rare.

If I were to install turbo in it, how easy would it be to get IP adjusted/modified to give more fuel (engine is directly injected)?

would it be safe to add more than a few psi of boost considering how beefy this motor is? I don't know if turbo versions were upgraded with stronger parts or features like piston cooling jets (similarly to om6XX) so I wonder how far I could push it.

Sounds like an OM314, what´s the # on your IP?
PES4Axxx.........

The turbo engines had piston oil cooling, stronger internals, .....

Ermagrrd, that thing is AWESOME

Also, I'm sure dieselmeken could do some magic with that pump to squeeze a little more power out of it, but you'll need a turbo and everything after the flywheel will need to be strengthened lol

-1982 300D Turbo, 280k miles, ALDA apparently maxxed, fram 8038, 12 lbs boost, non-egr manifolds, W/M injection, 4 brake light mod, Gen II w126 front rotors/calipers, 4-speed swap
In the works: A/W IC, adjust pump, turbo rebuild (w/60 trim comp wheel)
-1980 300SD, 110k, project car. Goal is to get it lookin' like it did on the showroom floor (body and interior wise, not necessarily under the hood )
-1974 240D, FRESH PAINT!!!!!!

Side valve diesel? I didn't think it was possible to get practical compression ratios from a side valve engine for a diesel to work well.
