Hi I'm trying to get my BMW box mated up to the 606, have my clutch setup almost sorted,. Using a sprung type (not diaphrag) clutch from thwaites dump truck with uprated springs and custom twin plate setup. I've the box stripped and plan is to lengthen the spiggot shaft then make adaptor plate to mate gearbox to engine has anyone tryed this setup??

Cheers Dave

Hi Dave,

Assuming it is a GS5 you have bought (I've just bought the later 6 speed GS6-53DZ to do the same). What flywheel are you using?

I didn't think the 606 solid flywheel and starter ring would fit inside of the bellhousing on the GS5?

Now that I have bought it, I have discovered that the GS6 actually has the same belhousing ID (around 325mm) as the OM606 (see pics) and I have been wondering about a custom flywheel and adapter plate for that.. I have do do some measuring.

Otherwise, my approach is to be the same as swecias I think - I will design and cut an intermediary plate to weld.

One thing you might be able to help me with - I am missing the pilot bearing shaft (the short shaft that goes into the end of the spline'd input shaft and pilot bearing in flywheel).

I can't seem to get one from MB (they supply no gearbox spares at all unbelievably) and I guess I will have to fabricate; I wondered if you could measure the one you have (length/ diameter) and take a photo for me if its anything other than a straight shaft?

Why did you use 604 flywheel, not 606?

because om606 is dual mass flywheel

ah OK.. thinking about it my flywheel is from SM conversion from a Sprinter.. I had forgotten there was none for 606.

I have been measuring again tonight though.. ID of both 606 and GS6-52DZ gearbox are 32.5mm so MB flywheel and starter ring fit comfortably inside.. I am thinking that a adapter plate is a real possibility, however I am unsure what the effect of say +25mm depth of plate will be on distances for clutch plate to flywheel and pilot bearing shaft. I guess possibly flywheel can be set further out on crankshaft to compensate.. I must investigate this.

you are talking about the axle that goes from gearbox in throu pressure plate clutch and centers in the flywheel

have that part loose from a scraped 717430, single-mass flywheel gearbox, if anyone need measurments i can get those.
