Hey guys ive got a uk spec 190d and id like to put an om606 into it. Pretty straight forward right? No!

The main problem im facing is the steering box being in the way of the downpipe. Someone has already tried putting in an om606 with a kkd manifold and his solution was to convert to steering rack because there was no clearance! Id rather not do this if i can help it.

So, what would you guys suggest I do?
Converting to rack is my last option, it seems difficult to get right and i have no experience with such matters.
Routing the exhaust through the bonnet is the simplest solution but as its a daily i dont want to do that!

how about an oval shaped downpipe or flat, as long as its the same volume, would shape actually effect flow???
just a thought.

(05-13-2013, 09:44 AM)hooblah So, what would you guys suggest I do?

What's the clearance like towards the front? Any chance of flipping the Turbo around and having intake routed to the stern and exhaust coming down near the front cylinders?

What about dipping into the fender/thru firewall/other sheet metal a little bit?

I have no idea yet as I havent attempted it. Huh

The only person I know who has done it is HughF and he says its not possible so is converting to rack and pinion. Ive asked him about it but he hasnt replied. Hes the only person who can tell me how much clearance I have.

Ive thought about flipping the turbo, but once again I have no idea until I get the engine in. Im just going by what other people have said.

I dont want to attempt it without knowing for sure if it fits. I havent got a garage to work in so doing a rack conversion myself isnt really feasible. I've rung around a few people regarding a rack conversion but noone wants to touch it!

hi,
i'm fitting 0m606 into w202 c250, different model i know, but
i had thought of using the steering rack from my w210 as it would be easy because the pipes would all fit,
after doing some measuring i reckoned the steering rack would be sitting more in the way, as the box sits closer to the chassis.

get that engine fitted and you will think of something.Big Grin

I got an R107 fitted with a 606 turbo and manual trans. 60mm downpipe routed down in front of the steering box. 107 has curved Pitman arm which allows this mod even on full lock. Almost as if it were meant to be.
