Yes yes yes, I know, OIL THREAD!!!!!11!!!1!

I'm having a hard time choosing between these two for the 300D.

Both are real full synthetic, both are Diesel rated. The 300 has no form of heater and, unless the 240 dies, it will be a warm weather car.

15w-50 has higher phosphorus and zinc levels for extra anti-wear, thicker lubricating surface, higher hot oil pressure and 5qts for $22 (vs 4qts).

5W-40 is specifically for Diesels, meets many more diesel oil API specs and handles soot better. The big downer is that its made with low phosphorus to not foul the EPA's precious DPF.

Right now I'm strongly leaning towards the 15W50 for the extra anti-wear additives unless somebody can come up with a really compelling reason to go for the 5w-40....

Winter cold starts would be my vote for the 5W-40. Im a convert after watching the difference last winter.

The phosphorous and zinc are good for the high pressure lubricant for the cam shaft/followers if you don't have roller lifters! witch Benz diesels don't back then I would run the 15/40 until you have a problem with cold weather then change it!

The 300 won't see cold weather. When it starts to get cold outside I'll switch to the 240 with its toasty heater and manual climate controls.
