Here's my project vehicle...
'84 Dodge Rampage with a 1.5L turbo VW engine.
167 HP, 238 ft-lbs of torque.

It hit 120 mph on the road-simulation dyno. They enter the vehicle weight, aerodynamic data, and altitude corrections so that the dyno will load the vehicle as if it's running on the road.
I am planning to be on the Bonneville Salt Flats from Sept 30-October 4th to find out how fast it really is.

with an om606 and rwd it would easily hit 200mph
It would go pretty fast, but 200 is a long way away. There is a well funded LSR team with a late model S-10 truck and a 1,200 HP Cummins 5.9L. To date, I think they only have 1 run over 200.
Within the rules, it is not permissible to switch from FWD to RWD.

I think I have communicated with your friend in Norway. (Alcaid on one of the other boards). The engine rules are pretty wide open, as long as it displaces less than 1520 cc's and runs on diesel fuel only. Any turbo, any pump work, any head work, etc. Goran at Dieselmeken did the injection pump work.
The body of the truck must retain its stock shape, but can be lowered.
This car is amazing. If the gearing is right it will do 120mph easy.
What's the record?
The cars has to be trucks? s10 pickup and a cummins should easily be beaten by a w201 with a om606 in regards of top speed.

The current record for H/DT (1.5L Diesel Truck) is 106 mph through a measured mile.
There are classes for all kinds of vehicles, cars, trucks, bikes, "streamliners", "lakesters", as well as many modified body styles based on production models.
My next dream is something like an S10 with OM606 turbo power. The current record in 3-liter Diesel Truck is 131 mph. A strong OM606 turbo in a small truck like an S-10 should be very competitive against this record.

It's a somewhat odd-ball combination of parts, that was put together specifically to meet the displacement requirements for this particular racing class.
The block is a 1.6L, "Turbo" block. The rotating assembly is from an early (1977-1980-ish) 1.5L VW non-turbo engine, with some modifications. The head is a 1.9L "AAZ" unit with plenty of non-standard parts. The cam is special, the injection pump is special, the turbo is a GT2056 Garrett, and the exhaust is all fabbed with as little restriction as possible.

Yes, but the rules prohibit switching a vehicle from front wheel drive to rear wheel drive. If I could figure out how to fit an OM606 under the hood of my Rampage (sideways), and still have room for a transaxle, I think I would have a very good chance of topping 131 mph.
I definitely have thoughts of an OM606 superturbo powering a small rear wheel drive truck for future LSR attempts, though.

Is there a FWD turbodiesel class for <1.5L but >3.0L?
I ask because my DD is a 2.8L and while mine is in a Jeep Liberty/Cherokee (KJ), they were also available in the Dodge Caravan FWD platform oversees. That transaxle *could* be useful but I know nothing about it.

The 2.8L engine would be in "F" class (between 2.016L and 3.014L). Very interesting that that engine is/was available in FWD Caravan platform overseas. I didn't know that before a couple of minutes ago. I'll have to look into that for future efforts.
Mercedes also makes a similar layout (transverse engine, FWD) small van, available with a diesel engine, which of course we never got in the USA.

The Vito came with a turbo om601 and FWD.
The Volvo S80 T6 is straight six, 24v, transverse, 272hp and FWD. That gearbox is quite tough and super narrow on the mounting side. Should be possible to fit an om606 on that gearbox and make it fit your truck. But a 6-7-800hp om606 and FWD Hmm, might be hard or impossible to drive.
I think it's better to use a RWD chassis and make it right to begin with. We have to break 1000whp sometime with the old om606
A 2-liter OM601 with Vito style transaxle would be very fun to use for my little truck.
What would it take to build a 2-liter 604 based engine (16V head on the 2 liter bottom end)?
My imagination thinks that the MB combination may be able to make more power than the VW based 4-banger diesels. My imagination has been wrong many times, but that doesn't stop it from being very active.

There are a lot tougher FWD transmissions out there, like the SAAB 9-3 6spd gearbox or the more available Opel Calibra 6spd gearbox. Building a tough 2-liter om604 are no major problem. Then you can use om605/606 rods with is a lot tougher than stock om604.
To both trans there are Quaife LSDs out there (might be on the lesser side of a $1000)

You need less than 1999cc?
2015 cc is the upper limit for the class. I have been thinking about the possible combinations, and how to achieve them. We have the 2.2L OM601 here in the USA, but not the 2 liter version. I think the bores are the same, but the 2.0 has a shorter stroke.
I have read that the OM601 block is tougher than the OM604, but I'm not sure why, or if it's possible to put the OM604 head on a 601 block if using the 605/606 turbo pistons and rods. There may be no advantage to doing so. I "assume" that the 604 block does not have oil squirters for the pistons. In the US, we never had an OM601 turbo, either, only naturally aspirated versions were imported here.
In any case, the options are wide open, as long as the engine is less than 2015 cc's, runs on diesel fuel only, and retains the front wheel drive layout of my vehicle. In the future, I may build a rear wheel drive truck for other classes, but want to get my money's worth out of this one first.

We could easily build you a tough om604 with some 400bhp attached to a tough enough gearbox. We have the 601-turbo engine here also, but the 604 is a better engine. Block failure are on the 2.2-liter version (like our) due to bigger bore. With "stock" 605/606 bore it will hold together as well as any 605/606.
