My 82 NA 240 has developed an awful vibration at idle, it goes away with some throttle. As a bandaid, I just adjusted the idle up, but the idle has to be high enough that it takes quite a bit of effort on the brake pedal to keep from rolling away at a red light. All the engine and tranny mounts seem to be good and tight. There is no noise from the transmission so I don't think it's the torque converter. I assume that I have a missing cylinder, but I don't know if it would be a valve adjustment or an injector issue. What would be a decent price for a valve adjustment? Any other suggestions?

To isolate the problem at idle go through the injector lines 1 by 1 and crack them open with a wrench, 13mm I think. Just listen and watch the fuel seep out and see if that gives you any clues.
For the valve adjustment you can probably do it in under 2hr your first go and once you've done it a few times you can be through in 45min. Surely there are guides on that here somewhere.
Also, recommend nice clean fuel filters, clean fuel, and there's a screen in the tank that can get clogged a bit.
No other problems/symptoms? Or any video?

Nice body, tons of ridiculous mechanical issues - 300d turbo 82' /motor 85'

Injector lines are 17mm at the injectors

-1982 300D Turbo, 280k miles, ALDA apparently maxxed, fram 8038, 12 lbs boost, non-egr manifolds, W/M injection, 4 brake light mod, Gen II w126 front rotors/calipers, 4-speed swap
In the works: A/W IC, adjust pump, turbo rebuild (w/60 trim comp wheel)
-1980 300SD, 110k, project car. Goal is to get it lookin' like it did on the showroom floor (body and interior wise, not necessarily under the hood )
-1974 240D, FRESH PAINT!!!!!!

All new filters except for the strainer in the tank, but I did try reversing the return and pick up line with no change. The only other problem is where it has always started and idled just fine, hot or cold, it has died a few times right after starting. It always starts right up and continues to run after that. I will try to shoot a video and post it, it will be Friday before I get the chance.

Is it only at idle that you are getting the vibration?

humm if cracking the injectors makes a difference, like it idles worse when you crack them, you might search for air in the lines. i had a fuel line leaking from tank to hard lines that ran under the car, and the copper crush washers on the fuel filter banjo lines were leaking, and the o rings on top of the fuel filter... also the now pink SD we own needed engine mounts... that was really violent before i changed them. need less to say, there are many reasons for bad idle... good luck hunting them down. like was said before i would start by checking injectors, then i would look for leaking fuel lines, then valve adjustment, you should be able to visually check the engine mounts and if they look ruff change them.

Violent idle I would check :
Injectors popping properly (the line-by line check)
valve adjustment
proper glowplug operation
chain stretch
pump timing

larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?

I've started having the same problem with my so-far stock 190d 2.5, It doesn't happen on start up but if I've been driving at speed for a little while & then pull up at lights the whole car rocks, & when accerating away it pulses until just over 40km/h.

It turned out to be the motor mounts. I couldn't tell there was much movement at the mount, but the shop who fixed it for me showed me the old ones. They were trashed, and with the new ones in, it's smooth as a 240 can be. I'm gonna have the valves adjusted too, but for now the problem is remedied.

Motor mounts make a huge difference in vibration Evan if there not broken they can get stiff over time

Between parts labor and extra time to extract a broken bolt, it ended up costing $315... More than I'd hoped, but it's fixed and it would have taken me all weekend with the broken bolts and stuff.
