Okay so I know the manual calls for ATF in the manual trans, but when I did my swap on the w123 I used some synthetic 10w-30, and it seems to be much easier to shift now than when I first got it all going. That being said, I'm fairly certain my w115 probably has ATF in it, and while it isn't really difficult or anything to shift, it isn't slick like the w123 is.
Just curious if anybody else has had any similar experiences?
To my knowledge, ATF is used for it's friction modifiers for the synchros. The lubricity difference between ATF and motor oil is probably negligible.
I've had experience with old ATF in a high mileage trans cause difficulty getting into gear. A fluid change helped significantly. Maybe putting motor oil in there would have also caused an improvement.
I use Royal Purple synthetic ATF
larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?
My ranger has a Mazda MD05 manual tranny in it that is dying. It got Wolf's Head synthetic ATF last change.

I might have to change the fluid in it sometime here in the near future, see if itsoothes things up a little
I've filled with Mobil 1 5w30 before and regular ATF. Both worked just fine.
