My apologies.
I understand that this may be a "beaten into the dust" kind of question, but...

What in the hell is an "OM617a"?

Just when I thought I knew about Mercedes diesel engines, I hear mention of this thing.

So if somebody would please clear this up for me and others.

What is an om617a?
And how does it compare to an om617?

om617a = turbo
om617 = NA

from what i know, the turbo has oilsquirters under the pistons where the 617 dont.
(different injectionpump etc etc.)

to get your 200whp, a 617a with a 617injectionpump is probably the way to go. (+turbo IC etc)

it is cheaper and better to get different elements in the NA-pump (m-pump)
the turbo617 has a mw-pump.

+ a few more.

The 617a (turbo) has a stronger crank, piston squirters, different cam, sodium filled exhaust valves, and a different oil pan bolt pattern. MW pump comes stock. MW pump is more sophisticated but not a lot of tuners out there.

the 617 (Naturally aspirated) has a weaker crank, no squirters, regular valves, and a different oil pan bolt pattern. M pump comes stock. many tuners for the m pump (dieselmenken comes to mind)

Also, the rods may or may not be different I don't know.

larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?

Yes they are. The 617a rods accept a larger diameter piston wrist pin compared to the n/a 617.

Gota love Mercedes Diesels!
