Well I went and looked today....whoa. He claimed a daily driver. That thing was buried in snow hidden behind other cars. Found documents on floor from junk auto auctions. Hood was not bolted on.

WVO grime all over. Evidence of a single tank set up. Probably a line in line set up. The hose the heat the fuel line gone but an odd fuel line wrapping around the engine. Plenty of gunked up primary filters laying around.

Tested resistance on glow plugs and all were good. Glow light not on though. Used my jumper box and it turned well enough to start.....no oil circulation in the head? When cold I opened the oil cap and the head was dry, oil pressure was pegged high. I let it keep running. When warm oil started moving through it. Coolant reservoir was empty, white smoke, #16 head. Bad idle.

Body and interior were nice. Sad but I don't have time to mess with that.

Heavy tapping too. Maybe a collapsed lifter?

I sorta like that w124 chassis. That may be something I go for down the road.

I just am afraid of any car that was running WVO. If it was a perfect set up maybe i would think about it but this looked sloppy. If he still has it once it warms up I'll consider looking at it again and investigate further. I just don't have the capability yet to be swapping heads or motors. Someday.....when i have a garage. And if i bring one more car home that cant be reliably driven everyday my wife is going to shoot me :-)

Learned a good bit from this little escapade though. My father went with me too, he is into older VW diesels but when he heard this thing rev up I think he fell in love.

70 fast for a diesel engine.? That tells me he knows not much about gearing and mechanical stuff in general. I've seen them cheaper from people who specialize in these.

Wait a few months and low ball I say.

Plus its a bare bone, no creature comfort SUV. Why not buy a jeep shell for a few hundred, do a swap, have the same experience. Sure its not "Mercedes" but I think in this case you are paying 14,000 for a name and a little more for a decent motor. Its like the default minimum of 10,000 for a w123 wagon on eBay. Someone somewhere might pay that crazy price but they probably shouldn't.

That GD is dumb, no turbo. Wouldn't touch that 220D with a ten foot pole either, looks like it's got an automatic, which coupled with that 59hp at the crank would be super slow.

-1982 300D Turbo, 280k miles, ALDA apparently maxxed, fram 8038, 12 lbs boost, non-egr manifolds, W/M injection, 4 brake light mod, Gen II w126 front rotors/calipers, 4-speed swap
In the works: A/W IC, adjust pump, turbo rebuild (w/60 trim comp wheel)
-1980 300SD, 110k, project car. Goal is to get it lookin' like it did on the showroom floor (body and interior wise, not necessarily under the hood )
-1974 240D, FRESH PAINT!!!!!!

The car is a mint 95 e300d that I purchased a couple months ago as a commuter to give my 300ce and tdi beetle a break. It was a little too low for my taste (and it rubbed when loaded with passengers) so I put on some uncut h&r's. Rides beautifully now.

My 1987 300TD wagon is still for sale. Some assembly required. The paletted engine is out of another '87 300TD which got T-boned at low speed in Seattle. The engine (OM603) has 289K on it and has a #14 head, but the fellow who sold it to me, Zeitgeist from the Benzworld forum, says it has zero timing chain stretch (i.e. the timing chain is a recent service replacement) and is a solid runner. You'll need a radiator and intake manifold; otherwise it's essentially all there. If you've got the time and tools to assemble it, I doubt you'll ever get an opportunity to own an '87 300TD in this nice of condition for so little money:
