W123 Wagon w/ BMW M30b35 Drift Car
W123 Wagon w/ BMW M30b35 Drift Car
Hey guys, I've been thinking lately and really would like to build a drift car. I have a w123 wagon that I used as a parts car for my other 123 that would make a perfect candidate. Do you guys think the bmw m30b35 would fit in the bay? What kinds of custom fabrication do you think would need to be done besides motor mounts, driveshaft, and that kind of stuff. What kind of rear end would i use? Would this swap be doable? I know it wouldn't be a diesel anymore, but I still thought I should post my idea on here. lol Thanks a lot guys.
I think it would fit check the oil pan sump for clearance with the cross member would be my only concern. The stock rear diff should be fine the m30 engines really like turbos! I use to have a 1984 745i turbo 5spd technically an m106 but basically the same engine
What would I do about the wiring harness? Would I use the m30s harness?
I had a BMW with M30, which I replaced with OM606. The measures between the engines are very close to each other, and I know a few W123/OM606 cars, so yes, it's doable with reasonable mods.
But why use M30? With n/a M30 you'd get about 250hp with reasonable costs, which I think is quite underpowered for that car. The engine is also quite heavy compared to alternatives like BMW M50 or Mercedes M104. Both have proven to be good for turbocharged ~1000hp. For about the same amount of work and dollars spent, why not to do it properly in the first place?
Electrics need attention, no matter what engine you'll swap. There are no bolt-on solutions, but the easiest way is to use engine's own harness married to the car's harness.
larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?
If you want easy, awesome power get a SOHC or DOHC 4.6L v8 from a crown vic and turbo it. These guys hack it together and their prices are way on the low end, but if you cruise CL you can find similar stuff:

I was thinking m30 because i could get a whole parts car for cheap. Mercedes and BMW are my favorite cars, so I think it would be cool to combine it into one. Eventually, I would turbo it, just stock internals. Everyone says these engines are boost crazy. Who knows, it could even turn into a daily driver instead of a drift car.

To each their own, I've been lusting after a boosted Coyote for a while hence my suggestion

I'm not worried about weight. The stock OM617 weights about 600lbs when the m30 with getrag 260 weights about 550lbs.
